Mangaluru Sea Ambulance Service to Launch Before Monsoon 2025
Mangaluru Sea Ambulance Service Operational by May 2025

In a significant move for coastal safety, Karnataka's Minister for Fisheries, Ports, and Inland Water Transport, Mankal S Vaidya, has announced that the much-anticipated sea ambulance service for Mangaluru will be operational before the onset of the next monsoon season.

Harbour Modernisation and Safety Pledge

The minister made this crucial announcement during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the modernisation of the Mangaluru Fishing Harbour at Bunder. This ambitious project is being executed under the central government's Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with a substantial estimated investment of Rs 37.5 crore.

Minister Vaidya confirmed that the tender process for procuring the dedicated sea ambulance vessel has already been finalised. He set a clear timeline, stating that the service is expected to be fully functional by May of next year. This initiative is squarely aimed at enhancing emergency medical response and ensuring the safety and security of fishermen while they are at sea.

Acknowledging Fishermen's Role and Grievances

During his address, the minister emphasised the vital role played by the fishing community. "Fishermen on the Karnataka coast also protect the coast, and hence there is a need for the government to think about their problems too," Vaidya stated. He called for strong political will among people's representatives, including himself, to provide the necessary infrastructure for this essential workforce.

Highlighting a pressing issue, the minister pointed out the lack of adequate space to anchor all fishing boats. He stressed that resolving the grievances of fishermen requires a concerted effort from both the state and central governments, working in a joint collaboration.

Looking Ahead: Infrastructure and Welfare

The introduction of the sea ambulance marks a critical step in addressing long-standing concerns regarding occupational hazards faced by fishermen. The modernisation of the fishing harbour under PMMSY, coupled with this new emergency service, represents a dual focus on upgrading infrastructure and directly safeguarding human lives.

This development is seen as a proactive measure to prevent tragedies at sea by ensuring timely medical aid, which could significantly reduce fatalities and improve overall welfare in the fishing community of coastal Karnataka.
