Manipur Chief Minister's Peace Mission in Ukhrul District
In a significant move to foster reconciliation, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh embarked on a visit to Ukhrul district on Friday. This area has recently been marred by violence between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities, prompting the CM's direct engagement with residents to promote peace and harmony.
Emotional Encounters and Calls for Dialogue
During his interactions, Singh conveyed a powerful message, stating that every community comprises both positive and negative elements, but the universal desire among common citizens and innocent children is for peace. In a poignant moment at Thawai Kuki village, a woman broke down in tears, to which the CM responded with empathy, asserting, "There is no other option left other than dialogue for the restoration of peace." He expressed deep concern that ongoing violence could severely impact future generations, urging elders to control their minds for the sake of the children.
Addressing Immediate Community Needs
The Chief Minister assured villagers of his commitment to resolving pressing issues. He pledged to look into resuming normal classes in schools and prioritizing the provision of drinking water, promising immediate action upon his return to Imphal. At Shangkai village, women highlighted the lack of potable water, and Singh assured them this would be addressed on a priority basis.
Warm Receptions and Development Discussions
Singh's maiden visit to Ukhrul included stops at multiple villages along the Imphal-Ukhrul road. At Sharkaphung, a Tangkhul Naga village, he was warmly welcomed by the village chief, elders, women, and residents. Recalling historical lessons, he noted that even World War II ended through continuous dialogue despite catastrophic events like atomic bombings.
In Shokvao, villagers presented him with a traditional shawl and expressed happiness over his visit, while also sharing concerns about government development works. At Ramva village, elders, women, and schoolchildren accorded him a warm welcome, urging road development and upgrades, to which Singh assured inclusive development across the state.
District Headquarters and Festival Preparations
At the Ukhrul district headquarters, the CM received a rousing reception from the district administration, residents, civil society organizations, and village authorities at the mini secretariat. Accompanied by Deputy CM Losii Dilkho, Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh, several MLAs, and Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, he later inspected preparations for the upcoming Shirui Lily Festival 2026 at Shirui village, highlighting efforts to boost local tourism and community engagement.
This visit underscores the state government's proactive approach to healing divisions and addressing grassroots issues in Manipur's conflict-affected regions.
