Manipur Chief Minister Holds Historic Meeting with Kuki Zo Council in Guwahati

In a significant development aimed at addressing the prolonged ethnic conflict in Manipur, Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh met with representatives of the Kuki Zo Council for the first time since violence erupted in 2023. The closed-door meeting took place on Saturday at a hotel in Guwahati, Assam, marking a crucial step in ongoing peace efforts.

Deliberations Focus on Restoring Normalcy

The meeting was specifically convened to deliberate on concrete measures to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur, which has been grappling with severe ethnic tensions for nearly three years. According to official correspondence, the chief minister's secretary sent a formal letter to the council's chairman requesting the meeting, with the agenda clearly focused on matters related to bringing back stability to the strife-hit state.

Singh traveled from Imphal to Guwahati in the morning to participate in the discussions, which were continuing at the time of reporting. This outreach to the Kuki Zo Council represents part of a broader attempt by the state administration to engage various stakeholders in meaningful dialogue and reconciliation processes.

Political Criticism Amid Fragile Peace Efforts

Meanwhile, back in Imphal, opposition leaders voiced strong criticism of the current government's handling of the situation. Keisham Meghachandra, leader of the Manipur Congress Legislature Party (CLP), described the BJP-led state government as the weakest administration in Manipur's recent history.

Meghachandra expressed deep concern about the government's apparent inability to resolve pressing issues that have prolonged the unrest. There is no hope under the present dispensation, particularly concerning the deteriorating law and order situation, he told media representatives.

Fresh Tensions Complicate Resolution Efforts

The Congress leader highlighted the unfortunate emergence of fresh tensions between Naga and Kuki communities even as the nearly three-year conflict between them remains unresolved. He urged all communities to adopt a mindset of peace and understanding but accused both state and central governments of failing to coordinate effectively.

We cannot see seriousness in resolving the issue, Meghachandra stated. Many of the fresh conflicts occur in areas where checkposts and outposts of central forces are present. Yet arson and killings continue unabated, he added, pointing to security failures.

Allegations of Government Ineffectiveness

Further intensifying his criticism, Meghachandra alleged that the state government lacks a coherent roadmap to peace and cannot act independently without consent from the central government. It is all because the weakest government exists in Manipur, he asserted. Hence, till today, we are not able to resolve issues related to internally displaced persons or establish lasting peace in the region.

The meeting in Guwahati occurs against this backdrop of political criticism and continuing ethnic tensions, where efforts to rebuild trust between communities remain fragile. The outcome of these discussions could significantly influence future peace initiatives in Manipur.
