Manipur Chief Minister Leads Historic Road Visit to Jiribam District After Years of Conflict
In a significant development for peace and reconciliation efforts, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday spearheaded a delegation of MLAs and political leaders on a road journey to Jiribam district. This marked the first such visit via National Highway-37 in nearly three years, as prolonged conflict had severely disrupted the movement of people across the state.
Security and Symbolism of the Journey
Elaborate security arrangements were meticulously put in place ahead of the Chief Minister's travel along the highway, ensuring a safe passage for the delegation. Notably, Khemchand had previously visited the district in February this year using a helicopter, highlighting the challenges posed by the ongoing unrest. The road trip, covering over 220 kilometers in approximately six hours to reach the district bordering south Assam, symbolized a renewed commitment to normalizing travel and fostering connectivity.
Engaging with Conflict-Affected Communities
During his second visit to Jiribam since assuming the role of Chief Minister, Khemchand actively engaged with internally displaced persons (IDPs) and individuals from diverse communities. This interaction signaled a robust push to rebuild trust and solidarity among those impacted by the conflict. At a community event held at New Alipur Rongmei Naga village, the Chief Minister praised the district for setting a historic precedent in Manipur.
"Jiribam has created a history by becoming the first district in Manipur where all communities sit together in the restoration of peace after three years of unrest," Khemchand stated. He further commended the residents, saying, "People of Jiribam are the most broad minded in the state."
Government Efforts to Support IDPs
The program featured interactions with IDPs belonging to various tribes, including Meitei, Kuki, Paite, and Hmar communities. Khemchand emphasized his government's dedication to assisting these displaced individuals in every possible manner. "I may not fulfil all your wishes, but I will continue to help you all in whatever way I can," he assured them.
Addressing the desire for return and rehabilitation, the Chief Minister added, "Everyone always wanted to return home and our government is making every effort to help the IDPs in the construction of new houses." This statement underscores ongoing initiatives aimed at providing sustainable solutions for those affected by the conflict.
Inspection of Healthcare Facilities
In addition to community engagements, Khemchand visited the Jiribam District Hospital at Ningshingkhul to inspect the available medical facilities. This visit highlights the government's focus on improving essential services and infrastructure in the region, further contributing to the overall recovery and well-being of the local population.
