Violent Clashes Erupt in Manipur Over Tragic Children's Deaths
Protests stemming from the heartbreaking deaths of two children in a recent bomb blast in Manipur have descended into violent confrontations, with demonstrators clashing directly with security forces during a large-scale torch rally in Imphal, according to police reports. The tragic incident, which claimed the young lives on April 7 in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district, has sparked daily protests across the Imphal Valley districts, reflecting widespread community anguish and frustration.
Torch Rally Escalates Into Dangerous Confrontation
On Monday night, a massive seven-kilometre-long torch rally was organized, stretching from Mayai Lambi to Keishamthong in Imphal West district. What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly turned aggressive as participants confronted security personnel, leading to a dangerous escalation. A police officer detailed that security forces were compelled to fire multiple rounds of tear gas in the Keishamthong area after hundreds of protesters, openly defying curfew restrictions, demanded permission to extend their march by an additional 200 metres towards Keisampat. This area is notably close to significant locations including the Lok Bhavan and the BJP state office, adding political tension to the volatile situation.
Curfew orders are currently in effect across all five valley districts, strictly prohibiting any individual movement outside homes from 5 pm to 5 am daily. Despite these measures, the protest turned violent when demonstrators began pelting security forces with stones and iron pellets launched from catapults. This aggressive action seriously endangered the lives of the heavily outnumbered security personnel on the ground, according to official statements.
Police Response and Additional Arrests
In response to the escalating violence, Manipur Police have taken decisive action by arresting 19 individuals for violating curfew and engaging in various offences. These included road blockades and damage to public property within the Greater Imphal area. The arrests were executed from various parts of Imphal West district on Sunday, as confirmed by a formal police statement. This crackdown highlights the authorities' efforts to maintain order amidst the growing unrest.
Parallel Vigil Honors Other Civilian Victims
Meanwhile, in a separate but related development, Ukhrul district headquarters witnessed a candlelight vigil on Monday night. This solemn event was organized to pay tribute to two Tangkhul Naga civilians who lost their lives in an ambush in the TM Kasom area on April 18. This vigil underscores the broader context of civilian casualties and community mourning in the region, adding layers to the ongoing tensions.
