Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Launches Scathing Attack on Previous Governments in Gurdaspur
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann delivered a blistering critique of previous state governments and unnamed political leaders on Monday, accusing them of devastating Punjab through rampant drug abuse, systemic corruption, and deliberate neglect of border regions. Speaking at a public gathering in Qadian within the border district of Gurdaspur, Mann asserted that his administration is firmly committed to rebuilding the state through comprehensive development projects and transformative education reforms.
Foundation Stone Laid for Major Infrastructure Project
The chief minister's remarks came immediately after he laid the foundation stone for a significant infrastructure initiative: the renovation of 237 rural link roads spanning nearly 497 kilometers, with a total project value of Rs 168.44 crore. This ambitious undertaking aims to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in Punjab's rural and border areas, which Mann claimed had been systematically ignored by past administrations.
Direct Accusations Against Political Opponents
Without explicitly naming individuals, Mann launched into a fierce condemnation of what he described as "smugglers who represented the area for years" and allegedly destroyed generations of Punjabis. He declared that such figures must now confront the verdict of the people through democratic processes. "These leaders possessed neither genuine ideology nor authentic commitment to serving the common citizen," Mann stated emphatically. "Their sole obsession has consistently been the capture and retention of political power at any cost."
Mann further elaborated on the perceived disconnect between these political figures and ordinary Punjabis. "These royal leaders have absolutely nothing in common with the everyday people of our state," he proclaimed. "Their luxury vehicles, their expensive overcoats, their extensive wardrobes, and their extravagant lifestyles exist in a completely different universe from the daily struggles and aspirations of common Punjabis."
Specific Allegations Against Previous Administrations
The chief minister leveled specific accusations against preceding governments in Punjab, claiming they had actively harmed the state's future through two primary actions:
- Systematically shutting down government schools, thereby depriving countless children of quality education.
- Consistently neglecting border regions, leaving them underdeveloped and vulnerable.
In stark contrast, Mann highlighted that his Aam Aadmi Party government is pursuing an aggressive agenda of constructing modern, state-of-the-art schools and has initiated programs to send teachers abroad for advanced training to enhance educational standards.
Criticism of Opposition Parties
Mann extended his critique to Punjab's principal opposition parties, delivering pointed remarks about both the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Referring to reported internal conflicts within the Congress over leadership positions, Mann alleged, "Every Congress leader in Punjab appears to be solely focused on becoming the chief minister. They have more chief ministerial aspirants than they have dedicated ordinary party workers." He referenced a recent public rally where senior Congress leadership reportedly rebuked local members, stating, "The Congress has transformed into a deeply divided house that will inevitably collapse under the weight of its own internal infighting and power struggles."
The chief minister was equally dismissive of the Shiromani Akali Dal's leadership. He mocked their electoral ambitions, saying, "Those who cannot even assemble 11 members to form a basic committee within their own party are now fantasizing about winning all 117 seats in the Punjab legislative assembly." Mann then leveled serious allegations, claiming that such leaders had actively patronized criminal gangsters and facilitated the spread of drugs among Punjab's youth by providing protection to smugglers.
"The Akali Dal has degenerated into a party of political deadwoods who have been decisively rejected by the people of Punjab time and again," Mann declared. He cautioned that although the Akalis might attempt to exploit religious sentiments for political advantage, the citizens of Punjab are too discerning to be misled by such tactics.
