Mann Rejects CBI Probe, Backs Punjab Police in Official Death Case

Punjab Chief Minister Stands Firm Against CBI Probe Demand

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has firmly rejected demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged suicide of a state official, asserting that the Punjab Police is fully capable of conducting a fair and thorough investigation. Mann made these remarks during a media briefing at the Chief Minister's Residence in Sector 2, Chandigarh, on Tuesday, responding to mounting pressure from opposition parties and the victim's family.

Opposition and Family Push for Central Agency Involvement

The controversy stems from the death of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, an official with the warehousing corporation in Amritsar, who reportedly took his own life after accusing former Punjab minister Laljit Singh Bhullar of harassment in a video. In response, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in the Lok Sabha on Monday that he would immediately order a CBI inquiry if all Punjab MPs submitted a written request, following Congress MP Gurjit Singh Aujla raising the issue. Major opposition parties in Punjab, including the BJP, Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal, have joined the family in demanding a central probe, citing concerns over impartiality.

State Government's Response and Actions Taken

Chief Minister Mann emphasized that the state government is committed to a transparent investigation, announcing the formation of a chief secretary-level committee to delve into the incident. He confirmed that Bhullar has already resigned from the state cabinet and was arrested on Monday, with plans to seek remand after producing him in court. Mann assured that action will be taken as per law based on the committee's findings, and any additional conspirators identified will also face arrest. We do not try to shield anyone. For me, Punjab is one family, he stated, reinforcing his stance against any cover-up.

Mann Counters Opposition with Past Incidents

In a pointed rebuttal to opposition parties, Mann cited historical cases of suicides during their regimes where senior leaders were implicated, questioning whether they ever ordered CBI probes or forced resignations. He specifically mentioned the suicide of a Haryana ADGP-rank officer last October, noting that only the DGP was transferred without a central investigation. Mann accused opposition leaders, including BJP's Sunil Jakhar, Congress's Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and Partap Singh Bajwa, and SAD's Bikram Singh Majithia, of uniting solely to criticize him, claiming that law and order is under control, while they are out of control.

Legal Framework and Ongoing Developments

The Amritsar police have registered a case against Bhullar, his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, and personal assistant Dilbag Singh under sections related to abetment of suicide, criminal intimidation, and common intention under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Mann reiterated on Monday that strict legal action will be taken against any violators, regardless of their position. This incident has sparked widespread political debate in Punjab, highlighting tensions between state autonomy and central intervention in sensitive cases.
