Margao Villagers Stage Fierce Protest at Panchayat Office Over Bandhara Project

A tense and volatile situation erupted at the Sanvordem panchayat office in Margao on Monday as hundreds of furious residents from Mirabag village stormed the premises in a dramatic gherao. The protesters were demanding the immediate scrapping of a proposed 50 MLD bandhara project, which they fear could lead to catastrophic consequences for their village.

Escalating Tensions Following Torchlight Procession

The protest at the panchayat office came just one day after villagers had already taken to the streets in a powerful torchlight procession from Curchorem to Mirabag. This escalating series of demonstrations highlights the deep-seated anger and frustration within the community over the proposed infrastructure project.

Hundreds of residents from Mirabag forcefully entered the panchayat office, raising loud slogans and accusing local officials of complicity in a project that was allegedly thrust upon them without any prior consultation or discussion. "We were never taken into confidence," fumed one resident, capturing the collective sentiment of the agitated crowd.

Serious Environmental and Agricultural Concerns

The villagers presented detailed warnings about the potential impacts of the bandhara project, including:

  • Significant flooding risks that could endanger homes and infrastructure
  • Destruction of fertile agricultural land that sustains local livelihoods
  • Irreversible environmental damage to the region's delicate ecosystem

When Sarpanch Chinmayee Naik and several other elected representatives entered the panchayat office, they faced a barrage of pointed questions from the angry protesters.

Specific Demands and Ongoing Sit-In Protest

The protesters made several specific demands, including:

  1. That elected representatives join the sit-in protest that has been ongoing in the village for the past 13 days if they truly support the villagers' opposition to the project
  2. An explanation for the panchayat's failure to ensure that trenches dug at an earlier abandoned site by the bandhara project contractor were properly filled

With tensions threatening to boil over completely, police teams were quickly deployed to the panchayat premises to maintain order and prevent any escalation of the situation.

Official Response and Continuing Standoff

Sanguem Mamlatdar Siddharth Prabhu rushed to the scene in an attempt to pacify the agitating villagers. He informed the protesters that the deputy collector had already written to the Water Resources Department (WRD) requesting appropriate action regarding their concerns.

However, the crowd remained unmoved by these assurances and refused to leave without concrete commitments. They specifically demanded the immediate filling of trenches dug by the contractor, citing serious safety hazards for local residents who could potentially fall into these dangerous excavations.

The standoff continues as villagers maintain their determined opposition to a project they believe threatens their homes, livelihoods, and environment.
