Kolkata: Mass resignations by councillors in civic bodies across the northern suburbs and Barrackpore industrial belt continued on Monday, with all 24 councillors of Barrackpore Municipality, including the chairman, submitting their resignations.
Chairman and Councillors Step Down
Three-time chairman Uttam Das and other councillors submitted their resignation to the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) at the Barrackpore Administrative Building on Monday afternoon. As Das was leaving the SDO office after submitting his resignation, a group of people hurled eggs at his vehicle.
Earlier Resignations and Party Exit
According to sources, councillors from four wards had already resigned earlier. The remaining 20 councillors have now also stepped down. Das has also quit the Trinamool Congress. The vice-chairman and all TMC councillors of the municipality have reportedly resigned as well.
Explaining his decision, Das launched a scathing attack on the party leadership. The resignations have affected civic bodies across North Dum Dum, Titagarh, North-Barrackpore, New-Barrackpore, Bhatpara, Kanchrapara, Halisahar, and Garulia.
