The Municipal Corporation of Yamunanagar-Jagadhri (MCYJ) has intensified its efforts to prevent waterlogging in the twin cities ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. Following directives from Mayor Suman Bahamani and Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad, a joint team from the engineering and sanitation branches reopened a blocked main drain near the Jagadhri bus stand. The drain had been obstructed due to illegal encroachments.
Using earth-moving machinery, the MC team cleared encroachments over a 500-meter stretch. Subsequently, they removed garbage, silt, and mud that had accumulated in the drain over several years. Mayor Suman Bahamani and Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad have been conducting surprise inspections of drain-cleaning work across the twin cities.
According to officials, the blockage had caused waterlogging in the bus stand and surrounding areas during previous rainy seasons. The unclogging of the drain is expected to provide relief to thousands of residents from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chowk, Valmiki Basti, and Ashok Vihar Colony.
Inspections and Immediate Action
On Wednesday, the Mayor and Municipal Commissioner inspected major drains near Prakash Chowk, Gauri Shankar Temple, Saint Thomas School, Ashok Vihar, Sector 17, Swami Vivekananda School, and Gymkhana Club. During the inspection, encroachments were found on drains near Ashok Vihar and the Jagadhri bus stand. Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad issued on-the-spot directions to concerned officials to remove the encroachments and clear the drains immediately.
The MCYJ has urged residents to cooperate by not dumping waste or constructing structures over drains, which can lead to blockages and waterlogging. The civic body is committed to ensuring a smooth monsoon season through proactive measures and regular monitoring.
