MCD Mayoral Election Scheduled for April 29, Nominations to Open Soon

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to hold elections for the crucial post of mayor on April 29, according to official sources. An official notification regarding the electoral process is expected to be issued on April 15, paving the way for a significant political contest in the national capital.

Nomination Timeline and Additional Elections

The nomination filing process for the mayoral position will commence on April 16, with the last date for submissions set for April 23. In addition to the mayor's election, officials confirmed that polls for the deputy mayor and three vacant seats in the standing committee will also be conducted on the same day, April 29, streamlining the municipal governance appointments.

Political Strategies and Historical Context

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to finalize its candidates for the mayor, deputy mayor, and standing committee posts in a joint meeting to be held soon. This move comes as the party aims to consolidate its position in the MCD. Last year, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) notably stayed away from the mayoral contest, a decision that impacted the electoral dynamics.

The mayoral post in Delhi follows a rotational system comprising five one-year terms. The sequence is: first term reserved for women, second for the general category, third for a reserved category, and the remaining two for the general category. This year's election marks the fifth term under the current cycle. However, given that the last MCD elections were held in December 2022 and mayoral polls are conducted at the beginning of each financial year, there is a possibility of a sixth mayor assuming office within the ongoing five-year term of the MCD, adding a layer of complexity to the municipal timeline.

Past Trends and Current Electoral College

In the first three terms of the current cycle, AAP councillors held the posts of mayor and deputy mayor, showcasing the party's initial dominance. In the fourth term, BJP councillor Raja Iqbal Singh won the mayoral election following AAP's boycott, enabling the BJP to regain control of the MCD after a two-year gap in 2025–26. This historical shift underscores the competitive nature of Delhi's municipal politics.

This year, the electoral college for the mayoral election comprises 249 councillors, along with 14 MLAs nominated by the Delhi Assembly, seven Lok Sabha MPs, and three Rajya Sabha members. A candidate will require 137 votes to secure victory, setting a clear threshold for success.

Vote Distribution and Political Alliances

As of the current composition, the BJP holds 141 votes, which includes 123 councillors, seven Lok Sabha MPs, and 11 MLAs. In contrast, the AAP has 106 votes, comprising 100 councillors, three Rajya Sabha members, and three MLAs. Other votes in the electoral college are distributed among Congress (9 votes), Indraprastha Vikas Party (15 votes), one from All India Forward Bloc, one Independent member, and one vacant seat. This breakdown highlights the BJP's numerical advantage, but the dynamic nature of municipal alliances could influence the final outcome.

The upcoming election is poised to be a critical test for both major parties, with implications for urban governance and policy implementation in Delhi. Stakeholders are closely monitoring developments as the nomination process approaches.
