Major Crackdown in Meghalaya Over Election-Related Violence
In a significant escalation of law enforcement measures, authorities in Meghalaya have arrested more than 27 individuals, including former Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) member Sofiur Rahman, following violent protests against the participation of non-tribal communities in district council elections. The arrests occurred on Monday as the state government intensified its crackdown across the Garo Hills region.
Official Confirmation and Police Action
Deputy Chief Minister and Home (Police) Minister Prestone Tynsong publicly confirmed the arrests, indicating that additional legal actions may be forthcoming. "We leave it to the police to ensure such incidents do not reoccur in the future," Tynsong stated during a media briefing, emphasizing the government's commitment to maintaining public order.
The special police team from Tura Police Station apprehended Sofiur Rahman, a former representative of the Balachanda constituency, from his residence at New Bhaitbari under the jurisdiction of Rajabala Police Station in West Garo Hills. Rahman faces charges under multiple legal frameworks, including provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act.
Charges of Inciting Communal Disharmony
West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma detailed that Rahman's arrest was specifically linked to allegations of inciting communal disharmony. Police investigations allege that Rahman made several inflammatory social media posts that significantly contributed to escalating tensions in the region, directly fueling the violent protests.
Authorities have registered multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) against both Rahman and former MLA SG Esmatur Mominin. The legal complaints accuse them of delivering provocative statements that allegedly triggered the widespread violence and public disturbances.
Extended Curfew and Ongoing Security Measures
Amid continuing unrest and fresh incidents of violence, the West Garo Hills district administration has implemented extended curfew measures. The curfew, initially imposed, has been prolonged from 6:00 AM on March 17 to 6:00 AM on March 18, citing persistent threats to public safety and the need to prevent further outbreaks of violence.
The situation remains tense as security forces maintain a heightened presence across the Garo Hills, with authorities monitoring social media platforms and public gatherings to prevent additional incidents. The government's crackdown reflects a broader effort to address electoral violence and communal tensions ahead of district council elections.
