Meghalaya Government Creates 3.66 Lakh Jobs, CM Defends Employment Record

In a significant announcement during the state assembly's budget session, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma revealed that the government has generated approximately 3.66 lakh jobs in recent years through its employment policies and initiatives. The declaration came during the Question Hour on Thursday, where the CM addressed queries regarding the state's employment landscape.

Defending Government Policies Against Opposition Criticism

While responding to a pointed question from opposition legislator Mizanur Kazi of the Trinamool Congress, who questioned whether rising unemployment indicated government failure, CM Sangma firmly defended his administration's approach. "To jump to a conclusion that the policy is a failure would not be correct," Sangma stated, acknowledging that while goals might not be fully met yet, the government is "on the right track."

The Chief Minister emphasized that sustained interventions are already yielding results, with proactive measures including policy decisions, skilling programs, and entrepreneurship support. He highlighted the demographic challenge facing Meghalaya, noting that 50% of the state's population is below the age of 20, creating an urgent need for expanded job avenues through various missions.

Substantial Financial Support Through FOCUS Schemes

Providing concrete examples of government action, Sangma detailed significant financial allocations under employment schemes:

  • FOCUS Scheme: Sanctioned Rs 140 crore to 22,500 producer groups, directly benefiting 2.1 lakh people
  • FOCUS+ Scheme: Reached an additional 1.5 lakh beneficiaries with support and resources

"Farmers have benefited tremendously," the CM asserted. "Many have provided testimonies confirming that their production has improved substantially due to the financial assistance received. We are committed to ensuring more such positive impacts in the coming years."

Balancing Achievement with Acknowledgment of Challenges

While celebrating the job creation numbers, Conrad Sangma maintained a balanced perspective, admitting that the government's employment objectives have not been completely fulfilled. However, he expressed confidence in the current trajectory and the effectiveness of implemented policies.

The exchange in the assembly highlighted the ongoing debate between the ruling government and opposition regarding employment statistics and policy effectiveness. As Meghalaya continues to address its employment challenges, particularly for its young population, the government's reported creation of 3.66 lakh jobs represents a significant claimed achievement in its economic development efforts.
