Minister Sridhar Babu Condemns BRS Over House Proceedings Dispute
In a sharp rebuke on Wednesday, Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu strongly criticized members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for what he termed an "unhealthy practice" of attempting to dictate how the Speaker should manage the proceedings of the Telangana Legislative Assembly. The minister's comments came during a heated session where he addressed the opposition's conduct directly.
Questioning Opposition's Approach Post-Power Loss
Sridhar Babu pointedly asked how the BRS, now in opposition, could expect to continue with the same confrontational approach it employed while in power. He highlighted the party's past tendency to "bulldoze through legislative processes without regard for decorum," suggesting that such methods are no longer tenable. The minister reacted strongly to objections raised by BRS members while ministers were introducing bills, emphasizing the need for orderly conduct in the House.
Clarification on Microphone Access for Harish Rao
Addressing a specific incident, Sridhar Babu clarified that it was not practical to grant the microphone to BRS leader T Harish Rao in his capacity as deputy leader of the legislature party. "He would have the opportunity to speak freely whenever required if he assumes the position of legislature party leader," the minister stated, directing his remarks at Harish Rao. This statement underscored the procedural norms governing speech privileges in the Assembly.
Praise for Harish Rao's Qualifications
In a notable turn, Sridhar Babu expressed confidence in Harish Rao's capabilities, stating that the BRS leader possesses all the necessary qualifications to be elected as the leader of the legislature party. "The minister went on to state that Harish possesses all the necessary qualifications to be elected the leader of the legislature party, emphasising his confidence in the BRS leader's ability to effectively fulfil that role," he added. This acknowledgment, while critical of the party's tactics, highlighted a respect for individual merit within the political framework.
The dispute reflects ongoing tensions in the Telangana Assembly, with the ruling Congress and opposition BRS clashing over procedural matters. Sridhar Babu's remarks underscore the challenges of maintaining legislative decorum amid political transitions, as parties adjust to new roles in power and opposition.
