The Mizoram government has taken significant steps to address the growing concerns of its citizens facing difficulties abroad, particularly those who travelled for work without proper documentation. A crucial meeting of the Mizo Diaspora Cell (MDC) was convened to review these cases and formulate a stronger support system.
High-Level Meeting Reviews Distress Cases
The meeting, held on Friday at the Chief Minister's conference hall in Aizawl, was chaired by the cell's chairman, Vanlaldina Fanai, who is also the Secretary to the Chief Minister. The MDC, operating directly under the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), examined several emerging cases involving Mizo diasporas in countries like Dubai, Maldives, Nepal, China, and Malaysia.
A common thread in many of these distress situations was the lack of proper travel and work documents. Officials noted that several individuals had travelled to other countries for employment or financial opportunities without following legal channels. Some had even illegally crossed borders through Myanmar using fake passports, leaving them vulnerable and stranded.
Appeal for Legal Migration and Enhanced Support Plans
In response to these troubling reports, the MDC issued a strong appeal to all Mizo citizens seeking opportunities overseas. The cell emphasized the critical importance of following all laws and ensuring complete and proper documentation before undertaking any international travel for work.
The meeting also focused on improving the state's assistance mechanisms. Key plans discussed included making support more accessible to those in need and improving the speed and clarity of communication with affected individuals and their families. The officials strategized on sharing best practices and launching a public information campaign.
This campaign aims to widely disseminate essential 'dos and don'ts' and other crucial information for aspiring migrant workers through various media platforms, aiming to prevent such crises before they occur.
Mizo Diaspora Hub Gains Traction with 40 Associations
A positive development highlighted in the meeting was the growing engagement with the Mizo Diaspora Hub, a digital platform designed to connect and coordinate support. According to the latest updates, a total of 40 Mizo welfare associations from different global regions have now registered on the hub. This includes two associations based within India itself.
To leverage this network, the meeting proposed holding regular online meetings with these registered associations. Strategies were also discussed to encourage and enable more Mizo community associations worldwide to register on the platform, thereby strengthening the safety net for citizens abroad.
The proactive stance of the Mizoram government through the MDC underscores a commitment to protecting its citizens globally, promoting safe migration, and building a structured system of support through technology and community collaboration.
