Manipur MLA Vungzagin Valte's Final Journey from Delhi to Churachandpur

The mortal remains of Manipur's Thanlon MLA Vungzagin Valte, who passed away in Delhi on Saturday after nearly three years of medical treatment, embarked on a solemn journey to his final resting place in Churachandpur, Manipur. The body was transported via Mizoram, with the cortege departing from Delhi and arriving at Lengpui Airport in Mizoram at 3 pm on Sunday.

Ceremonial Tributes in Aizawl

Upon arrival, the reception at Lengpui Airport was attended by Lalmuanpuia Punte, adviser to Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who represented the CM. A farewell ceremony followed at the Bawngkawn South YMA Hall in Aizawl, where the Central YMA offered floral tributes and draped the traditional Mizo mourning cloth, known as a puan, over the mortal remains. Several ministers and other dignitaries were present to pay their respects during this emotional gathering.

Night Journey to the Border

Later in the night, around 10 pm, the body was taken to Khawdungsei village in Mizoram, located near the Manipur border. The pall-bearers continued their journey through the night, proceeding to Khokon near the Manipur–Mizoram border as per the schedule. They are expected to cross the Tuivai bridge on Monday morning.

Final Leg to Churachandpur

After crossing the border, the Zomi Youth Association (ZYA) leadership will pay tribute to their departed leader. The procession will then travel through villages including Phaitong, Khajang, Sumtuk, Mualpheng, Dialkhai, and Vaipheimual, allowing locals to offer their last respects. It will reach his home constituency, Thanlon, before proceeding to Mulnuam, his birthplace, and finally to his home in Churachandpur. The cortege is anticipated to arrive at his residence in New Lamka around 11 pm on Monday, where he will be laid to rest.

Background and Condolences

BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte was attacked by a mob on May 4, 2023, while returning home from the residence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over Valte's demise, describing it as a profoundly saddening event. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma also conveyed his sorrow through social media, noting that Valte's untimely death represents not only a loss for Manipur but a significant tragedy for all Zo communities across the northeast region.
