Humayun Kabir Offers Rejinagar Seat to Mamata Banerjee
Kolkata: Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir has offered to vacate the Rejinagar Assembly seat for former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Kabir, who currently holds both the Nowda and Rejinagar seats after being suspended from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), stated that Banerjee must approach him directly for the offer to be considered.
Background of the Offer
Kabir, a former TMC member, was suspended from the party last year following his announcement about the construction of a ‘Babri Masjid’ in Beldanga. This statement led to his suspension and subsequent independent victories in both constituencies. Sources had earlier indicated that Kabir planned to field his son from the Rejinagar seat, but he has now altered his stance, opening the door for Banerjee.
Political Implications
The offer is seen as a significant political move in West Bengal, where Banerjee’s TMC is preparing for upcoming elections. Kabir’s gesture could indicate a potential rapprochement or a strategic alignment. However, Kabir emphasized that the decision rests on Banerjee initiating contact. The development adds a new layer to the state’s complex political dynamics, with Kabir’s AJUP playing a balancing role.
Observers note that Kabir’s offer might be an attempt to regain favor with the TMC leadership or to secure a stronger bargaining position. Meanwhile, Banerjee has not yet responded publicly to the proposal. The coming days will reveal whether this offer leads to a political realignment in the region.
