Motihari: The Muffasil police on Sunday arrested Robin Kumar, alleged boyfriend of Rimi Kumari, a third-year student at Motihari Engineering College (MEC) who reportedly died by suicide on May 21. Rimi was found unconscious in her hostel room; college principal denies hanging, while police cite suicide. The father has lodged a murder case, alleging collusion between college and police. An SIT has been formed to investigate.
Incident Details
On May 21, after Rimi's room door was broken open in the afternoon, she was found sitting unconscious on a chair, according to MEC Principal Navneet Kumar. He denied that she had hanged herself. Students rushed her to a private nursing home, where she could not be saved. However, SHO of Muffasil police station Priyanka stated that Rimi died by suicide.
Father's Allegations
Rimi's father, Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Muzaffarpur, reached the college and lodged a murder case, demanding a thorough investigation. He accused the college and police administration of collusion, alleging that his daughter was strangled. He noted that on the night before her death, she was completely normal during a phone conversation with him and his wife. He claimed the college management is protecting the murder accused.
Police Investigation
SP Swarn Prabhat has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the student's death. According to the autopsy report, the cause of death is suicide. The SP added that vital clues have been recovered from the deceased's mobile phone, and the police are investigating with technical support. Robin Kumar had sent a message to Rimi just before the incident, to which she replied positively. However, she took the drastic step thereafter.
Ongoing Probe
The SIT is examining all evidence, including the mobile phone data, to determine the exact circumstances leading to Rimi's death. The arrested boyfriend is being questioned. The college administration has been directed to cooperate fully with the investigation.
