Shivamogga MP Urges Government Action on Crop Insurance and District Development
Shivamogga Member of Parliament BY Raghavendra has emphasized the critical need for weather-based crop insurance to reach farmers adequately, urging the government to implement appropriate measures. During a district development coordination and monitoring committees (DISHA) meeting held at the zilla panchayat auditorium on Tuesday, he highlighted the injustices faced by farmers in the district regarding insurance claims.
Addressing Crop Insurance Failures and Infrastructure Issues
Raghavendra pointed out that last year, farmers in Shivamogga district suffered a significant loss, with an insurance amount of approximately Rs 70-80 crore going unclaimed due to systemic failures. He stressed that the rain gauge stations, which determine crop loss for insurance purposes, must function properly to ensure fair compensation. Currently, out of 280 rain gauge stations in the district, only 112 are operational, representing a mere 40% functionality rate. Additionally, the backup stations for these centers are also not working correctly, exacerbating the problem.
The MP called for officials to conduct a thorough study of these issues and submit a detailed report to the government. He insisted that the government must take swift action to provide adequate insurance to farmers and compensate for the losses incurred in the previous year. Furthermore, Raghavendra advocated for making the terms and conditions of insurance policies transparent and suggested holding meetings with local MLAs to draft terms that favor farmers' interests.
Infrastructure and Social Welfare Initiatives
Beyond crop insurance, Raghavendra addressed several infrastructure and social welfare concerns during the DISHA meeting. He instructed BSNL officials to repair old towers and clear pending bills to improve telecommunications in the region. Under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), he noted that 53 projects were sanctioned for the state, with 25 of these (nearly 50%) allocated to Shivamogga district. He emphasized the importance of completing these projects within the stipulated time frame while maintaining quality standards. The MP also directed the CEO of the Zilla Panchayat to inspect and provide instructions for repairing damaged roads, ensuring that PMGSY projects are implemented in coordination with other relevant departments.
In terms of social welfare, Raghavendra announced plans to distribute motorised two-wheelers to disabled individuals under the 2024-25 Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. This initiative aims to help disabled persons become self-reliant and live with dignity, promoting inclusivity and support within the community. Additionally, he instructed officials to take measures to supply water to Koteganguru and Shikaripura under the Karnataka Urban Water Supply Board, addressing essential water needs in these areas.
Law and Order Concerns
Raghavendra also raised concerns about law and order in the district, urging the district police superintendent to take strict action against miscreants. He specifically highlighted the need to control the sale of ganja and spurious liquor, which pose significant risks to public health and safety. By addressing these issues, the MP aims to create a safer and more secure environment for the residents of Shivamogga.
Overall, the DISHA meeting served as a platform for Raghavendra to advocate for comprehensive development in Shivamogga, focusing on agricultural support, infrastructure improvements, social welfare, and law enforcement. His calls for action reflect a commitment to addressing the diverse needs of the district and ensuring that government schemes benefit all citizens effectively.
