Mumbai BMC Development Fund Allocation Ignites Political Firestorm
The allocation of development funds by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has erupted into a major controversy, with opposition members leveling serious allegations of discrimination against the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. The dispute centers on the distribution of a substantial Rs 800 crore set aside for the standing committee ahead of the final civic budget approval.
Allegations of Unfair Distribution by Opposition Parties
Opposition corporators have raised strong objections, claiming that BJP and Shiv Sena representatives received preferential treatment. According to their allegations, each corporator from the ruling combine was allocated over Rs 2 crore in addition to the Rs 1.6 crore already earmarked for development works in their respective wards. In stark contrast, corporators from Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress reportedly received only Rs 25 lakh each.
Ashraf Azmi, the Congress group leader in the BMC, voiced sharp criticism, stating, "The ruling dispensation has allocated a fund of Rs 2 crore each even to SP and AIMIM corporators. You are allocating Rs 2-3 crore for each corporator of the ruling combine, but Congress corporators have been given Rs 25 lakh each. This is injustice." He further highlighted that the opposition combine, which includes the MNS, comprises 95 corporators—nearly half of the public representatives in the BMC house.
Defense from Standing Committee Chairperson
In response to the allegations, Prabhakar Shinde, the standing committee chairperson, defended the allocation process. He explained, "The funds have been allocated based on the letters demanding development funds made by the corporators." This statement suggests that the distribution was tied to formal requests submitted by the representatives.
Detailed Breakdown of Fund Allocations
The controversy has brought to light specific allocations to key political figures:
- Ganesh Khankar, BJP leader of the BMC house, was allotted Rs 20 crore.
- Amey Ghole, Shiv Sena group leader, received Rs 10 crore.
- Kishori Pednekar, Shiv Sena (UBT) group leader, and Ashraf Azmi of Congress were each allocated Rs 2 crore.
Additionally, Zameer Querishi, an AIMIM standing committee member, confirmed that party corporators have received an allocation of Rs 2 crore each. However, Vijay Ubale, AIMIM group leader, raised concerns, noting that his ward was missing from the list for fund allocation. Meanwhile, Ajit Raorane, an NCP corporator, stated he would receive Rs 2 crore for development works.
Broader Implications and Political Tensions
This fund allocation dispute underscores deepening political tensions within Mumbai's civic governance. The opposition's claims of bias threaten to escalate into a larger conflict, potentially impacting the BMC's budgetary processes and public trust. As the city prepares for the final budget approval, the controversy highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring equitable resource distribution among elected representatives.
The situation remains fluid, with further discussions expected in the BMC house. Stakeholders are calling for transparency and fairness in future allocations to prevent similar controversies and maintain the integrity of municipal administration.
