The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in collaboration with the Western Railway and state authorities, launched a mega demolition drive on Wednesday to clear encroachments on railway land across Mumbai. The operation, which began early morning, targeted over 500 illegal structures, including slums, shops, and godowns, that had occupied railway property for decades.
Massive Operation Underway
Authorities deployed over 1,000 personnel, including police, civic staff, and railway officials, to ensure the smooth conduct of the drive. Heavy machinery such as bulldozers and excavators were used to raze the structures, particularly in areas like Dadar, Parel, Kurla, and Bandra. The drive is expected to continue for several days, with officials aiming to reclaim around 10 hectares of railway land.
Reasons Behind the Drive
The encroachments posed serious safety hazards and hindered railway expansion projects. According to Western Railway officials, the illegal structures were often built dangerously close to tracks, risking accidents. Moreover, the land is needed for track doubling, station upgrades, and other infrastructure works under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).
Legal and Administrative Actions
Prior to the demolition, authorities issued multiple notices to the occupants under the Indian Railways Act and the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code. However, many residents resisted, leading to minor scuffles. The police have been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents. The BMC has also set up rehabilitation centers for those rendered homeless, though officials clarified that only eligible families would be provided alternative accommodation.
Impact on Commuters and Residents
The drive caused temporary traffic disruptions in several parts of the city, as roads near the demolition sites were closed. Commuters faced delays in suburban train services due to the presence of heavy machinery near tracks. Meanwhile, affected residents expressed distress, claiming they were given little time to vacate. Community leaders have urged the authorities to ensure proper rehabilitation before further action.
Future Plans
This is part of a larger initiative to free up railway land across Maharashtra. Similar drives are planned in other cities like Pune and Nagpur. The reclaimed land will be used for railway projects, including new platforms, parking lots, and commercial complexes. Officials have assured that the drive will be carried out in phases, with due consideration to humanitarian aspects.
The mega demolition drive marks a significant step in Mumbai's efforts to decongest the railway network and improve urban infrastructure. While the operation has drawn mixed reactions, authorities remain firm on their stance to reclaim encroached land for public benefit.
