Maharashtra Minister Hasan Mushrif to Temporarily Assume Nandurbar Guardian Minister Role
In a significant political development in Maharashtra, State Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif announced on Thursday that he will temporarily assume the role of guardian minister for Nandurbar district. This position has remained vacant since December following the resignation of former minister Manikrao Kokate.
Political Maneuvering Behind the Appointment
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had initially proposed two candidates to the state government for this crucial position: senior leader Chhagan Bhujbal and Hasan Mushrif. According to reliable political sources, Bhujbal declined the responsibility, prompting Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar and NCP state president Sunil Tatkare to approach Mushrif with the request.
Mushrif expressed reservations about taking on the role, citing geographical challenges. "The party leadership has urged me to take Nandurbar's responsibility," Mushrif told TOI. "However, I am of the opinion that one cannot do justice to the role if the place is distantly located."
Previous Guardian Minister Assignment and Current Concerns
This is not the first time Mushrif has faced such a dilemma. After the Mahayuti coalition came to power in Maharashtra, Mushrif was initially appointed as guardian minister of Washim district. However, he declined that assignment, urging then Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar not to force him into the role.
"Washim is a distant place and I will not be able to do justice to the responsibility," Mushrif had argued at the time. Following his refusal, the government appointed Dattatray Bharane as guardian minister of Washim instead.
Nandurbar presents similar geographical challenges for Mushrif, who maintains multiple responsibilities in his home district of Kolhapur. The considerable distance between Kolhapur and Nandurbar raises practical concerns about effective administration and regular oversight.
Temporary Solution Until Permanent Appointment
Despite his reservations about the logistical difficulties, Mushrif has agreed to a temporary solution. "However this time around, till a permanent appointment is not made, I will assume the charge," he confirmed.
This arrangement ensures that Nandurbar district will have representation at the ministerial level while the government works toward identifying a permanent guardian minister. The temporary nature of Mushrif's appointment suggests ongoing negotiations within the ruling coalition about the district's long-term political representation.
The guardian minister system in Maharashtra assigns cabinet ministers responsibility for specific districts, where they oversee development projects, address local concerns, and serve as a liaison between district administration and state government. Nandurbar, located in northwestern Maharashtra, has particular significance as a tribal-dominated district with unique developmental needs.
