Hyderabad: Muslim religious leaders led by Maulana Md Hussamuddin Sani Jafar Pasha on Friday urged Rahul Gandhi and top leaders of Telangana Congress, including Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, to ensure greater Muslim representation in the state cabinet, Rajya Sabha, legislative council and other nominated posts.
“Muslims constitute nearly 14% of Telangana’s population and had supported the Congress with the expectation that the party would work for their development and ensure their participation in governance. But the community’s representation in the cabinet remained limited to one minister, Mohammad Azharuddin. As per Rahul Gandhi’s firm belief in ‘Jitni Aabadi, utni Hissedari’, more representation of Muslims should be there in the cabinet and other posts,” he said.
Background of the Demand
The delegation highlighted that the Congress party had promised proportional representation based on population during the elections. They stressed that the current allocation does not reflect the community's demographic strength or its contribution to the party's victory.
Key Points Raised
- Muslims constitute nearly 14% of Telangana's population.
- Only one Muslim minister, Mohammad Azharuddin, is in the cabinet.
- Demand for more representation in Rajya Sabha and legislative council.
- Reference to Rahul Gandhi's principle of 'Jitni Aabadi, utni Hissedari'.
The leaders also discussed the need for Muslim representation in various boards and corporations. They expressed hope that the Congress leadership would address their concerns promptly.
