Mysuru's Gandhi Square Stretch Plagued by Escalating Traffic Congestion
The bustling Gandhi Square area in Mysuru has become a focal point of severe traffic congestion, raising urgent alarms among residents and commuters. The critical thoroughfare linking Prabha Theatre to Gandhi Square is increasingly overwhelmed by chaotic conditions, primarily driven by unregulated vehicle parking and rampant encroachments.
Weekend Woes and Daily Disruptions
During weekends, the situation deteriorates dramatically as heavy vehicular movement leads to frequent traffic snarls, often bringing the flow to a near standstill. Motorists and daily commuters experience significant delays, with vehicles parked indiscriminately along the roadside. This haphazard parking narrows the usable carriageway, severely disrupting the smooth movement of traffic and causing widespread inconvenience.
Encroachments Exacerbate Safety Risks
Adding to the traffic woes, footpath vendors have gradually extended their stalls onto portions of the road, encroaching on public space. With little room left for pedestrians, who are forced to walk on the main roads, these encroachments create a dangerous scenario where both pedestrians and motorists must compete for the same limited space. This not only increases the risk of accidents but also compounds the daily struggles of commuters navigating the area.
Lack of Regulation and Persistent Issues
The problem has persisted for an extended period due to a lack of proper regulation. Activists have criticized the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) authorities for failing to implement measures to curb footpath encroachments, despite numerous complaints from the public about the inconvenience caused. At Gandhi Square specifically, unorganized parking has become a norm, with vehicles occupying almost every available space and often spilling onto the main road. This chaotic parking arrangement makes navigation through the junction increasingly difficult and unsafe, heightening concerns among local residents.
Authorities Respond with Promises of Action
Although no major accidents have been reported so far, residents fear that the prevailing conditions could lead to serious incidents if left unaddressed. In response to these growing concerns, Sundar Raj, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), has acknowledged the issue. He assured the public of prompt action, stating that he would personally inspect the area. Raj emphasized his commitment to working in coordination with relevant authorities to develop and implement an effective and lasting solution to alleviate the traffic congestion and improve safety on this vital stretch.
