Mysuru's KG Koppal RuB Delays Spark Major Traffic Crisis

The prolonged delay in completing the railway under bridge (RuB) construction and associated road widening projects near Kannegowdana Koppal (KG Koppal) on New Kantharaj Urs Road has become a significant bottleneck for Mysuru's urban mobility. This critical infrastructure gap is severely impacting the daily flow of vehicles and causing widespread inconvenience across the city.

Traffic Gridlock at Narrow Passage

Daily, thousands of vehicles, including state-run KSRTC buses, navigate through this narrow passage, which serves as a vital connector to key localities such as Kuvempunagar, Saraswathipuram, JP Nagar, and numerous other areas in west Mysuru. The congestion is exacerbated during peak hours from 8 am to 10 am and 5 pm to 7 pm, when vehicles line up on all four sides, creating a gridlock that disrupts the entire region.

The intersection also links to major institutions, including the district court complex, zilla panchayat, DC office, University of Mysore, Maharaja College, and Sharadavilas Educational Institutions towards Ashoka Circle. Commuters, including students, government employees, and local residents, are the worst affected, facing prolonged delays and increased travel times.

Safety and Infrastructure Concerns

The lack of traffic optimisation facilities, such as cameras, and the insufficient deployment of additional traffic police during peak hours have further aggravated the situation. The police department has officially identified this narrow passage as an accident-prone zone, with frequent road accident cases reported due to the chaotic traffic conditions.

Mysuru City Corporation commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif has acknowledged the issue, stating that the MCC will investigate demands to widen the stretch. He emphasized that discussions with relevant authorities are planned to address and alleviate the bottlenecks at this critical juncture.

Broader Implications for City Infrastructure

This traffic bottleneck not only hampers daily commutes but also reflects broader challenges in Mysuru's urban planning and infrastructure development. The delays in the RuB works highlight the need for accelerated project completion and better coordination between civic bodies to ensure smoother traffic management and enhanced safety for all road users.
