Nagpur Airport Cab Strike Enters Third Day, Unions Threaten Escalation
The ongoing agitation by cab drivers at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur has entered its third consecutive day, severely disrupting transportation services and causing significant inconvenience to passengers. Union representatives have issued a stern warning, stating they will intensify their protest if their demands are not addressed promptly.
Union Leader Issues Ultimatum
Leading the protest, union representative Deepak Sane declared that drivers are prepared to escalate their agitation. "If the issue is not resolved or we don't receive any hearing from the administration by tonight, we will begin a sit-in protest from Friday," Sane stated emphatically.
He explained their attempts at resolution: "We tried reaching out to the district administration, but were told officials are occupied with VIP movement in the city. Our discussions with airport authorities have also not yielded any outcome."
Sane emphasized their position: "We do not intend to make passengers' journeys difficult, but our concerns too need to be addressed."
Passengers Face Severe Transportation Challenges
Despite some marginal easing observed during late-night and afternoon visits to the airport, the overall availability of cabs remains severely limited. The situation has forced many travelers to:
- Rely on private pickups arranged at higher costs
- Walk long distances outside airport premises in search of transport
- Endure extended waiting periods for limited available services
Passengers arriving during daytime hours continue to face particular hardship due to the lack of reliable last-mile connectivity. With app-based cab services largely unavailable and local operators demanding inflated prices, transportation options remain scarce.
Passenger Experiences Highlight Growing Frustration
Sanika Shende, a passenger at the airport, described her ordeal: "I kept trying for nearly half an hour before a cab finally got booked. Even after that, there was uncertainty, but eventually the driver did arrive and picked me up from the airport. It was quite stressful, especially after a long journey."
Another traveler, Priyank Meshram, shared his experience: "There were no cabs available when I stepped out, and the waiting time kept increasing on the app. I had no option but to book a private auto, and the fare was much higher than usual."
Key Grievances Driving the Protest
Union members have identified several key issues fueling their protest:
- The imposition of a 100 rupee parking fee that drivers consider excessive
- Lack of formal agreements between drivers and airport authorities
- Perceived lack of response from administration to their concerns
Protesters allege that despite repeated attempts to engage with authorities, they have received inadequate attention to their grievances.
Potential for Further Disruption
Union representatives have indicated that a shift to a sit-in protest could significantly impact airport operations if authorities fail to intervene promptly. The threat of a prolonged protest has created a fluid situation at the airport, with commuters advised to plan their travel accordingly and anticipate potential transportation challenges.
The ongoing strike highlights broader issues in airport transportation infrastructure and the relationship between service providers and regulatory authorities. As the standoff continues, both passengers and drivers await decisive action from administration officials to resolve the impasse and restore normal transportation services at Nagpur's international airport.
