Nagpur District Approves ₹83 Crore Plan to Combat Rural Water Scarcity This Summer
Nagpur Approves ₹83 Crore Plan for Rural Water Infrastructure

Nagpur District Greenlights Major Investment to Tackle Summer Water Crisis

In a proactive move to address anticipated severe water stress during the upcoming summer season, the district administration in Nagpur has officially approved a comprehensive plan worth ₹82.90 crore. This substantial financial allocation is specifically aimed at strengthening and upgrading drinking water infrastructure across rural areas of the district.

Revised Proposal to Meet Escalating Demand

The proposal was meticulously prepared by the Rural Water Supply Department of the Zilla Parishad. This followed a thorough review of the annual water scarcity situation and the identification of villages deemed most vulnerable to shortages. Initially, a plan valued at approximately ₹79 crore was submitted. However, district officials, considering the rising and urgent demand for reliable drinking water, instructed the department to expand the scope and scale of the proposal. In response, the department submitted a revised and more comprehensive project report, now pegged at around ₹83 crore.

Infrastructure Overhaul and Summer Action Plan

The approved initiative encompasses a wide array of critical infrastructure works. These include the construction of new overhead water storage tanks, the repair and renovation of existing wells, essential maintenance of borewells, and the strengthening of village-level water distribution systems. Officials emphasized that these collective works are designed to significantly improve the reliability of drinking water supply in rural pockets that historically face acute shortages every summer, primarily due to declining groundwater levels and increasing temperatures.

Concurrently, the Rural Water Supply Department projected that as many as 1,170 villages within the district could experience varying degrees of water scarcity during the summer months. To systematically address this looming challenge, a detailed summer action plan has been formulated, covering an extensive range of remedial measures.

Comprehensive Remedial Measures Envisioned

The summer preparedness plan is notably detailed and multi-faceted. Key components include:

  • Execution of 489 repair works under various existing piped water supply schemes.
  • Drilling of 153 new borewells to tap into deeper aquifers.
  • Repair and restoration of 1,407 existing wells to maximize their output.
  • Installation of 52 temporary tap connections to provide immediate relief in critical areas.
  • Reboring of 196 public wells to enhance their water yield.

Furthermore, the administration has planned for tanker-based water supply in 97 villages where acute and persistent shortages are expected. Other strategic measures integrated into the plan involve the acquisition of water from 339 private wells and undertaking recharge activities for 170 water sources to improve long-term groundwater availability. In total, this summer preparedness strategy identifies approximately 2,903 distinct works to be carried out across the district.

Ongoing Monitoring and Expected Outcomes

Officials have stated that monitoring of water availability in the identified vulnerable villages will be carried out regularly. This vigilant oversight is intended to ensure timely intervention if and when shortages begin to intensify. With temperatures already on an upward trajectory, initial complaints regarding water scarcity have started to surface from several rural areas. The district administration is confident that the combined effect of these planned infrastructural upgrades and emergency measures will play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse impact of water shortages during the peak summer months, thereby safeguarding the water security of rural communities.
