Nagpur's Canal Road Retaining Walls in Critical Condition, Sparking Safety Fears

The retaining walls lining the Nag River along Canal Road in Nagpur have deteriorated into a dangerously unstable state, triggering widespread alarm among local residents and daily commuters. There is a growing fear that a serious accident could occur if immediate repair measures are not implemented without delay.

Extensive Damage and Historical Neglect

Substantial sections of the crucial retaining structure, especially in the Ramdaspeth area, are now either completely broken or missing. This significant damage originated during the severe deluge of September 2023, which critically weakened the wall's integrity at multiple locations. While the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) initiated some partial restoration work shortly after the floods, these efforts have been completely stalled for a considerable time. This prolonged inaction has left long, vulnerable stretches of the riverbank fully exposed and unprotected.

A High-Risk Corridor for All Users

A recent inspection revealed that the complete absence of safety railings or protective barricades has transformed the narrow Canal Road into an extremely hazardous passage for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. With the river flowing directly beside the carriageway and no physical buffer in place, even a minor misstep, a slight skid, or a moment of lost control could result in a catastrophic fall into the water below.

Signs of prolonged neglect are evident across several stretches, including severely eroded edges, significant accumulation of debris, and damaged stone pitching. In certain critical sections, the riverbank itself has caved in, further shrinking the already minimal gap between the road and the river's edge. As Canal Road has emerged as a premium residential belt, residents have also highlighted additional risks posed by vehicles parked precariously along the compromised embankment.

Voices from the Concerned Community

"We use this road every single day, and it has become increasingly unsafe," stated Alisha Khobragade, a resident of the Canal Road area. "During nighttime, visibility is critically low, and with no proper wall or railing in place, anyone—a pedestrian, a cyclist, or even a motorist—could accidentally fall into the river. The situation is terrifying."

Another local, Shirish Patane, pointed out a specific oversight: "Temporary barricading was installed to facilitate the rebuilding of a broken bridge over the river. However, once that bridge work was completed, the essential barricading was also removed, leaving the area exposed again."

Official Response and Funding Constraints

A senior official from the NMC's Dharampeth zone clarified that the reconstruction of these retaining walls is included in the comprehensive Rs 856 crore flood mitigation plan launched after the September 2023 floods. However, the official explained the current prioritization strategy: "Immediate priority has been assigned to stretches that were completely washed away or suffered severe damage during the monsoon rains. For other sections, funds are allocated only when a specific stretch is on the very verge of collapse or is in a highly dilapidated condition. It is important to note that the existing plan does not cover a comprehensive, wall-to-wall revamp of all retaining structures along the river."

This bureaucratic and funding limitation leaves many vulnerable sections in a state of dangerous limbo, with residents continuing to navigate a daily commute fraught with hidden perils, awaiting urgent and decisive action from the municipal authorities.
