Nagpur Municipal Corporation Launches Intensive Drive to Clear Ambazari Lake of Water Hyacinth
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has commenced a targeted initiative to address the persistent issue of water hyacinth in Ambazari Lake. This special drive, launched on Monday, is being executed by the civic body's Solid Waste Management Department as part of broader efforts to combat pollution in the lake.
Mayor's Directives Prompt Immediate Action
The campaign follows a recent inspection by Mayor Neeta Thakre, who visited Ambazari Lake and issued urgent instructions to the civic administration. Mayor Thakre directed officials to undertake the removal of water hyacinth on a war footing, emphasizing the need for swift and effective measures.
In addition to the removal efforts, the Mayor has mandated that officials take steps to halt the inflow of contaminated water into the lake, addressing a key source of pollution that has exacerbated the hyacinth problem.
Deployment of Machinery and Resources
To implement the cleanup operation, the Solid Waste Management Department has deployed four poclain machines at the site. These machines are specifically tasked with extracting the dense mats of water hyacinth that have accumulated on the lake's surface.
Dharampeth zone officer Lokesh Basanwar confirmed that the number of poclain machines will be increased if necessary to accelerate the removal process, ensuring the drive meets its objectives efficiently.
Impact on Lake Pollution
The excessive proliferation of water hyacinth has been identified as a major contributor to the deteriorating water quality in Ambazari Lake. By removing this invasive plant species, the NMC aims to significantly reduce pollution levels and restore the ecological balance of the lake.
