Nagpur Residents Face Increased Power Cuts During Pre-Monsoon Maintenance Drive
As Nagpur continues to endure scorching summer temperatures, power consumers must prepare for a rise in scheduled outages. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has initiated a comprehensive pre-monsoon maintenance and repair campaign across the district, aimed at fortifying the electrical system ahead of the rainy season.
Preventive Health Check-Up for Power Infrastructure
According to MSEDCL officials, this drive is designed to reduce technical faults and prevent extended power failures during heavy rains, storms, and strong winds. They describe the campaign as a preventive health check-up for the entire power network, involving temporary interruptions to allow technical teams to conduct repairs safely.
A senior MSEDCL official acknowledged to TOI that power cuts may increase in the short term due to the maintenance activities. We will ensure that most works are completed before 12 noon unless it is an emergency, the official stated, emphasizing efforts to minimize inconvenience.
Detailed Maintenance Schedule and Activities
A detailed schedule has been prepared, with maintenance primarily scheduled for Wednesdays. However, shutdowns may occur on other days based on urgency and the scale of work. Key maintenance tasks include:
- Large-scale tree trimming to prevent branches from contacting power lines during storms
- Replacement of old and rusted electricity poles
- Tightening of sagging wires and upgrading outdated conductors
- Safety inspections of critical infrastructure like transformers, feeder pillars, and ring main units
- Earthing inspections, oil filtration, and oil top-ups for transformers
Additional preventive measures involve replacing damaged insulators, cleaning feeder pillars, applying insulation spray, and installing protective guarding on power lines in high-traffic areas.
Minimizing Disruption During Peak Summer
Despite the timing during peak summer, officials assert that this exercise is crucial for long-term reliability. Chief engineer Dilip Dodke explained that efforts are focused on ensuring minimal disruption, with power supply suspended only during actual working hours. Consumers will receive advance notifications through SMS alerts and media announcements.
MSEDCL has appealed for public cooperation during the maintenance period and urged residents to register their mobile numbers for timely updates and to report outages quickly. This proactive approach aims to enhance system resilience and reduce future monsoon-related power issues.
