Nagpur Road Widening Project Faces Major Setback as Demolition Drive Halted
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation's ambitious road widening project on Old Bhandara Road suffered a significant setback on Wednesday when authorities were forced to abruptly suspend their demolition operations. The high-voltage confrontation between civic officials and protesting residents has once again derailed this critical infrastructure initiative that aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion in the city.
Massive Operation Meets Stiff Resistance
Nearly 100 officials from the NMC's town planning and land acquisition departments, supported by city police and enforcement squads from Gandhibagh and Lakadganj zones, arrived at the site armed with cranes and Poclain machines. Their mission was to resume the demolition of 467 acquired properties that had been identified for the road expansion project.
However, as officials began marking properties for demolition, residents quickly gathered in protest, physically blocking the operation. The situation escalated rapidly when BJP city president Dayashankar Tiwari arrived at the scene and threw his support behind the protesting families. Sources revealed that many property owners had already accepted compensation for acquisition but refused to vacate their premises, citing rehabilitation concerns and requesting additional time.
Political Intervention Forces Retreat
Faced with mounting pressure and the potential for law and order issues, Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari made the decision to call back the entire demolition squad. This marked the second major pause in the demolition drive, which was first launched in February and previously conducted operations on February 15 and 16 before being halted due to security arrangements for President Droupadi Murmu's visit and the Holi festival celebrations.
The Wednesday incident underscores the persistent administrative and political roadblocks that continue to stall critical infrastructure development in Nagpur, despite completed acquisition and compensation processes. Over 200 structures had already been razed during earlier phases of the project, but the remaining demolitions have now been indefinitely postponed.
Strategic Importance of Old Bhandara Road
Old Bhandara Road serves as a crucial artery connecting Central Avenue and Lakadganj to the old Bhandara route, and it has long suffered from crippling traffic congestion. The ambitious widening project aims to transform this vital corridor by expanding the stretch from Mayo Hospital Square to Old Motor Stand Square to 18 meters, and further extending from Bagdadiya Square (Old Motor Stand Square) to Sunil Hotel to 30 meters.
This corridor cuts through dense residential clusters and wholesale markets that bear heavy truck traffic daily, making the expansion essential for improving mobility and reducing travel times across the city. The project's repeated delays highlight the complex challenges urban planners face when implementing infrastructure improvements in established urban areas with significant residential and commercial activity.
