This initiative aims to provide immediate relief to thousands of consumers who have been receiving water bills up to five times their normal amounts.

Mounting Pressure and Political Criticism

The issue reached a boiling point during Friday's standing committee meeting, where corporators from across party lines launched scathing criticism against the civic administration for its delayed response. Standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani Wakhare revealed that the civic body would facilitate on-the-spot corrections at these camps and ensure that any excess payments made by consumers would be adjusted in their future billing cycles.

Despite a resolution passed during the March general body meeting directing immediate corrections, numerous consumers continue to receive unrevised inflated bills, according to committee members who expressed frustration over the administration's inaction.

Official Figures Reveal Widespread Impact

According to official statistics presented during the meeting, a staggering 25,643 consumers have been affected by the billing anomalies. The worst-hit areas include:

  • East Nagpur, where Satranjipura zone alone accounts for 6,841 affected consumers
  • Lakadganj with 1,571 affected consumers
  • North Nagpur's Ashi Nagar reporting 6,439 cases
  • Other impacted zones: Nehru Nagar (3,201), Gandhibagh (2,604), Dharampeth (1,568), Laxmi Nagar (804), Hanuman Nagar (637), and Dhantoli (793)

Root Causes and Administrative Lapses

The billing irregularities were initially flagged in a report submitted by Orange City Water (OCW), the private operator managing Nagpur's water supply. The report attributed the problem primarily to the absence of functional water meters in several areas, which led to arbitrary and excessive billing.

During the heated committee meeting, members including BJP corporator Sadhana Barde, Aslam Khan, Abhijit Jha, Abhishek Shambharkar, and Wasim Khan demanded immediate rollback of the inflated bills. They questioned why corrective measures weren't implemented earlier despite the issue being identified internally by the administration.

Administration Concedes Failure, Promises Action

Under mounting pressure, the administration acknowledged its lapses and assured comprehensive corrective action. Water supply department superintendent engineer Shweta Banerjee informed the meeting that revised bills would be issued promptly, with any excess amounts already paid by consumers being adjusted in subsequent billing cycles.

The proposed grievance camps are expected to fast-track resolution at the local level, providing affected consumers with direct access to municipal officials who can address their specific billing concerns. This move comes as public frustration has been compounded by additional issues including erratic water supply and delays in restoration works across various parts of the city.
