Nagpur Residents Allege Contractor Negligence After Sewage Work Cuts Power
Residents of Doctors' Colony in Chhatrapati Nagar, Nagpur, have raised serious allegations of negligence against a contractor after an overhead electricity wire snapped during sewage line laying work on Saturday. The incident resulted in significant power disruptions across the neighborhood, with residents claiming the contractor abandoned the site without taking responsibility.
Incident Details: JCB Machine Damages Power Line
According to eyewitness accounts from residents, the incident occurred when a JCB machine engaged in excavation work for civic infrastructure upgrades accidentally struck an overhead electric line while retracting its arm. The impact caused the wire to snap completely, immediately cutting off electricity supply to multiple houses in the densely populated colony.
The excavation work was part of ongoing municipal upgrades to the sewage system in the area. Residents reported that the JCB operator was maneuvering the heavy machinery in the narrow lane when the machine's arm made contact with the overhead wire, bringing the line down and creating a hazardous situation.
Contractor Abandonment and Resident Complaints
What angered residents most was the alleged response from the contractor and workers. "After the wire snapped, the contractor and his team simply left the spot without informing any authorities or making arrangements for immediate repairs," said one resident who witnessed the incident.
This action reportedly violated standard tender norms that require contractors executing civic works to immediately notify concerned departments and facilitate prompt restoration whenever public utilities are damaged during project execution.
With no response from the contractor, residents were forced to take matters into their own hands. They contacted Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) officials themselves to report the snapped wire and request restoration of power supply.
Resident Testimonies Highlight Safety Concerns
Dr. Nitin Mankar, a resident of Doctors' Colony, shared his family's experience with the power disruption. "Only my elderly parents were at home when the power went out unexpectedly. The contractor should have informed residents immediately after damaging the wire. This reflects a serious lack of responsibility toward public safety," he told reporters.
Dr. Mankar further explained that the restoration process faced additional complications because MSEDCL personnel couldn't easily access the damaged electricity pole. "When we contacted MSEDCL, their engineers faced difficulty reaching the electricity pole because the JCB was parked in the middle of the road. The lane is already narrow, and there was barely enough space even for a person to pass," he detailed.
Community Impact and Emergency Response
The power outage created particular concern because Doctors' Colony houses many senior citizens and includes a primary school within its premises. Residents emphasized that uninterrupted electricity supply is essential for daily activities, medical needs, and overall safety in such a community.
MSEDCL officials eventually managed to restore power through a temporary arrangement. According to residents, the electricity department implemented an emergency stopgap measure by drawing an overhead cable connection from another nearby line to resume supply while planning permanent repairs.
Abhijeet Naitam, deputy engineer of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's Laxmi Nagar zone, responded to the situation by assuring residents that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. "We will look into the allegations against the contractor and ensure proper procedures are followed for both the restoration work and any accountability measures," he stated.
The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about contractor accountability during civic infrastructure projects and the importance of proper safety protocols when working near essential utilities like electricity lines.
