CM Naidu Announces Stringent Measures Following Tragic Kakinada Factory Blast

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has declared that stringent norms will be rigorously enforced to prevent any recurrence of firecracker factory tragedies, emphasizing that tough action will be initiated against all those responsible for such devastating incidents. Making a detailed statement in the Assembly on Wednesday, Naidu described the catastrophic firecracker factory explosion in Kakinada district as profoundly unfortunate and deeply distressing.

Details of the Tragic Incident and Immediate Response

The chief minister confirmed that 26 individuals lost their lives in the massive explosion at the Suryashree Fireworks unit, while 6 others are currently undergoing intensive treatment in hospitals. Naidu, who was on an official tour of Vizianagaram district, rushed to the accident site immediately upon receiving the alarming information. Police and fire services personnel reached the location within 30 minutes of the blast to manage the emergency and commence rescue operations.

A formal case has been registered against the accused parties, and a comprehensive investigation is actively underway to determine the exact causes and liabilities. The licence for Suryashree Fireworks was originally granted during the previous YSRCP regime, according to official records.

Violations and Government Actions

The factory allegedly manufactured firecrackers in blatant violation of established safety norms and stored explosive material far beyond the permissible legal limits. Approximately 30 workers were employed at the facility, with large-scale production reportedly undertaken to meet heavy orders. "Producing excess explosive material out of sheer greed is utterly inhuman," the chief minister stated, adding that gross negligence and avarice directly led to this heartbreaking tragedy.

In response, the government has suspended the Peddapuram RDO, DSP, the Fire Officer, and the concerned Labour Officer pending further inquiry. A high-level committee has been constituted to probe the incident thoroughly, comprising Municipal Administration Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar and IG Ramakrishna.

Compensation and Support for Victims

Expressing profound grief and solidarity with the affected families, Naidu announced that an ex gratia payment of Rs 20 lakh will be granted to the kin of each deceased victim. Additionally, the government will construct houses for those without adequate shelter and extend all possible assistance to the impacted families to help them rebuild their lives.

The properties of the accused will be auctioned, with the proceeds handed over to the victims' families as part of the restitution process. The chief minister further asserted that the government will act firmly against other instances of negligence and crimes against women, underscoring a broader commitment to public safety and justice.

Political Context and Criticism

Naidu also took the opportunity to chide the opposition, noting, "We have an opposition which unfortunately abstained from discussing such grave issues and created a ruckus in the Council over Tirupati Laddu, despite committing a grave sin with Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy's prasadam." This remark highlights the political tensions surrounding the handling of serious public safety matters versus other contentious issues.
