Namakkal Villagers Stage Blindfold Protest Over Unfinished Tar Road Dispute
In a powerful display of frustration, residents of Kannimar Kadu and Malai Kadu near Pallipalayam in Namakkal district staged a dramatic blindfold protest on Thursday. The protest targeted local officials for their alleged failure to complete a long-pending tar road project that has left a crucial 500-foot stretch in legal limbo.
Legal Dispute Halts Critical Infrastructure
More than 300 families residing under the Agraharam Panchayat depend entirely on the Kannimar Kadu route to access the Sankari main road. The project's completion has been stalled due to a contentious legal dispute over a specific 500-foot portion. One individual claims ownership of this stretch, while villagers vehemently insist it is a documented public pathway, accusing the individual of illegal encroachment.
"Although the panchayat recently laid a tar road after decades of demands, the disputed 500-foot portion remains unfinished. As a result, residents, motorists and college students continued to face hardship while using the route," explained M Madeswaran, a local villager involved in the protest.
Protesters Demand Immediate Action
The villagers expressed deep dissatisfaction with the administrative response. They revealed having submitted multiple petitions to District Collector Durga Murthy and other concerned officials, yet no concrete action has been taken to resolve the dispute and complete the roadwork. To condemn this perceived negligence and delay, protesters adopted a symbolic approach.
Covering their eyes with black cloths, they crawled along the unfinished road section while shouting slogans demanding immediate tarring of the stretch. This blindfolded demonstration was intended to symbolize the authorities' "blindness" to their plight and the daily hardships they endure.
Political Repercussions Loom
The protest took a serious political turn as locals issued a stark warning. They threatened to boycott the upcoming state assembly election if their longstanding issue is not addressed promptly and satisfactorily. This ultimatum underscores the depth of their frustration and the potential electoral consequences for local representatives.
