Namaz Offered in Malegaon Municipal Office Sparks Political Controversy

A video that surfaced on Wednesday, depicting a group of nine or ten residents from Malegaon offering namaz inside the electricity department of the Malegaon Municipal Corporation on Monday, has ignited a significant political controversy. Senior BJP politicians have swiftly demanded action against those involved, turning the incident into a heated debate.

Residents' Explanation for the Incident

Speaking to reporters in Malegaon, a representative of the concerned residents provided context for the unusual act. He explained that on Monday, their area was experiencing a complete power outage, prompting them to visit the municipal corporation's electricity department to seek resolution. Upon arrival, they found the officer absent from his cabin. Coinciding with the time for Asr prayers, the group decided to offer namaz inside the office itself.

The representative further justified this by stating that if they had left the premises to pray elsewhere, they risked missing the officer upon his return. This, he argued, would have resulted in them leaving without the electricity supply being restored, prolonging their inconvenience. The act was portrayed as a pragmatic decision born out of necessity rather than any deliberate provocation.

Official Response and Escalating Tensions

Malegaon civic chief Ravindra Jadhav confirmed the occurrence of the incident. He recounted that on Monday, while he was not present in the office, the group arrived at his cabin and created a chaotic situation. Upon being informed, Jadhav instructed a subordinate officer to file a formal complaint against the individuals for causing pandemonium within the municipal premises.

However, the concerned employee only submitted an application to the local police station at that time, rather than a full-fledged complaint. Jadhav, who was in Mumbai on Wednesday, received additional information that a Hindu organization had submitted a memorandum regarding Monday's events, further escalating the matter.

Political Reactions and Calls for Action

The incident quickly drew political attention, with BJP leaders vocalizing their stance. State minister Nitesh Rane explicitly stated that he would certainly call for action in this regard, emphasizing the need for accountability. The demand for action underscores the political sensitivity surrounding religious practices in public or governmental spaces, turning a local administrative issue into a broader political flashpoint.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions and the complex interplay between civic grievances, religious observance, and political maneuvering in the region.
