Nashik Municipal Corporation Achieves Historic Property Tax Collection Milestone

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has achieved a remarkable financial milestone by collecting Rs 272 crore in property tax during the current financial year 2025-26. This represents the highest collection figure in the civic body's 43-year history, surpassing all previous records.

Exceeding Targets with Additional Revenue Expected

Officials have confirmed that the corporation had initially set a property tax collection target of Rs 270 crore for the fiscal year. With the current collection already standing at Rs 272 crore, NMC has not only met but exceeded its goal. Furthermore, authorities anticipate an additional Rs 10 to 15 crore to flow in over the remaining 21 days of the financial year, potentially pushing the final figure even higher.

Amnesty Scheme Drives Significant Revenue Surge

A major contributor to this unprecedented collection has been the implementation of strategic amnesty schemes for tax defaulters. The most recent initiative, conducted between February 23 and March 9, generated an impressive Rs 46 crore in pending dues.

"Over 13,000 defaulters cleared arrears worth Rs 45 crore during this period and received waivers totaling Rs 17.37 crore in penalties," an official revealed. The scheme offered nearly 95% waiver on the usual 2% monthly interest charges and notice fees that the civic body typically levies on outstanding dues.

"The amnesty initiative encouraged several property owners to settle long-pending liabilities, significantly boosting overall revenue," the official added. This follows an earlier similar scheme between September 1 and December 31 that helped the corporation collect an additional Rs 55 crore earlier in the year.

Rebate Programs and Expanded Tax Base

Revenue collection was further strengthened through well-designed rebate programs for prompt taxpayers. The NMC offered an 8% rebate for property owners who paid their annual tax in a single installment during April-May, and a 6% rebate for those making payments in June.

"These incentives helped NMC mobilize Rs 114 crore between April 1 and June 30, 2025, alone," another official stated, highlighting the effectiveness of these financial encouragement measures.

Additionally, the civic body has significantly expanded its tax base by adding approximately 30,000 new properties to the tax net during the current financial year. This expansion brings the total number of registered properties under NMC limits to over 6 lakh.

Retrospective Assessments and Geographic Distribution

The newly identified properties have been subjected to property tax from the current fiscal year, with owners also required to pay for at least the previous two financial years or from the year construction began. "This retrospective assessment has generated an additional Rs 30 crore over the past two years," a civic official explained.

Geographically, the majority of properties under NMC jurisdiction (nearly 48%) are located in the Panchavati and Cidco divisions, indicating concentrated areas of tax revenue generation within the municipal limits.

The combination of amnesty schemes, rebate programs, expanded tax base, and retrospective assessments has created a perfect storm of revenue generation for the Nashik Municipal Corporation, resulting in this historic achievement that sets a new benchmark for municipal financial management in the region.
