Nashik Municipal Corporation Calls for Statewide Fire Brigade Support for 2027 Kumbh Mela

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has formally requested assistance from all 26 municipal corporations across Maharashtra to bolster fire safety measures during the upcoming 2027 Kumbh Mela. The civic body is seeking the temporary deployment of fire brigade personnel and fire tenders specifically for the critical two-month period between August and September 2027.

Unprecedented Crowds Demand Enhanced Safety Protocols

This urgent request is a central component of the NMC's comprehensive safety and disaster-management strategy for the massive religious gathering. Nashik holds the distinction of being one of the four sacred cities in India where the Kumbh Mela is celebrated every twelve years. While the previous event in 2015 attracted an estimated 2.5 crore (25 million) visitors, civic authorities have projected a staggering attendance of over 5 crore (50 million) devotees for the 2027 edition.

The anticipated surge is directly linked to the scheduling of three major amrit snans (holy baths) within the August-September window. An NMC official, in discussions with media, emphasized that the sheer volume of pilgrims necessitates significantly expanded fire safety infrastructure. "The additional force sought from other municipal corporations is to be deployed exclusively for these two peak months," the official clarified.

"We are committed to preventing any untoward incidents, particularly given the expected density of the crowds and the numerous temporary settlements that will be established for the event," the official added. The administration has already initiated communication with all municipal corporations across the state, requesting they allocate a portion of their fire brigade staff and equipment for temporary duty in Nashik.

Strengthening Nashik's Own Firefighting Capabilities

In parallel with seeking external support, the Nashik Municipal Corporation is undertaking a major internal upgrade of its own fire and emergency services. This multifaceted enhancement plan includes:

  • The recruitment of 184 new personnel, comprising 150 firemen and drivers.
  • The procurement of 15 high-capacity fire tenders, each with a 6,000-litre water capacity.
  • Acquisition of three smaller fire tenders, five Rapid Intervention Vehicles, and one specialized rescue vehicle.
  • Addition of a water bowser, a 60-metre hydraulic water tower, and 13 agile fire bikes for rapid response in congested areas.

In a move towards advanced technological integration, the civic body also plans to acquire a firefighting robot. This equipment is intended for operations in environments deemed too hazardous or inaccessible for human firefighters. Comprehensive training programs have been scheduled to ensure personnel can operate all new and advanced equipment efficiently.

Formal Commencement of Preparations

The extensive preparations will be formally inaugurated with the flag-hoisting ceremony for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, scheduled for October 31 of this year. This ceremony marks the official countdown to the 2027 event, setting in motion the complex logistical and safety planning required to host one of the world's largest peaceful gatherings.
