Nashik Municipal Corporation Revives Critical Kazigadi Retaining Wall Project
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decisively reactivated its long-delayed initiative to construct a substantial retaining wall at Kazigadi, a vulnerable hillock situated along the banks of the Godavari river. This strategic move aims to decisively curb the recurring and hazardous landslides that plague the area, particularly during the intense monsoon seasons, thereby enhancing public safety and ensuring hillock stability.
Addressing a Decade-Long Safety Concern
The urgency stems from repeated and alarming instances of soil erosion at Kazigadi, originally known as Old Matichi Gadi. Located approximately 30 metres from the Godavari riverbank, this site has been a persistent concern since a devastating major landslide in 2013 destroyed 24 homes in the vicinity. Over subsequent years, the hillock has experienced multiple episodes of soil movement and minor landslides, raising significant red flags for local residents and authorities alike.
Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri confirmed to the press that the civic body has now prioritized this crucial project once again. "We have made the firm decision to construct a robust retaining wall at Kazigadi to safeguard the hillock and protect the community. This has been a long-standing public demand, with recent incidents powerfully underscoring the absolute urgency of this measure," she stated emphatically.
Seeking State Funding and Administrative Support
The proposal for the retaining wall will be formally submitted to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) through the District Disaster Management Authority. The NMC is seeking substantial funding of Rs 50 crore to execute this vital infrastructure project. Commissioner Khatri has actively discussed the pressing issue with State Cabinet Minister Girish Mahajan, who has directed the administration to immediately forward the proposal to expedite the fund allocation process.
Following this high-level directive, the civic body has meticulously finalized the construction plan and is preparing to submit the comprehensive proposal to the SDMA without further delay. Local corporators have repeatedly and vocally demanded a strong, effective retaining wall to prevent further erosion and avert potential disasters, especially during the monsoon months.
Previous Attempts and Current Resolve
This renewed effort is not the administration's first attempt to implement the project. In 2021, the NMC had previously issued tenders worth Rs 27.5 crore to build the protective wall as part of comprehensive hillock protection measures. However, objections from the legal heirs of Kazigadi unfortunately stalled the initiative, compelling the civic body to withdraw the tender. A subsequent proposal by the State Public Works Department also failed to gain the necessary traction to move forward.
Undeterred by past obstacles, the Nashik Municipal Corporation is now demonstrating renewed determination and administrative resolve to see this critical public safety project through to completion, ensuring the long-term security of the area and its residents.
