Nashik Municipal Corporation Allocates Rs 54 Crore for Monsoon Road Repairs
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken a proactive step toward monsoon preparedness by earmarking a substantial budget of Rs 54 crore for road repair works. This initiative aims to ensure timely maintenance and significantly minimize inconvenience for citizens during the rainy season.
Comprehensive Road Repair Plan Approved
The civic body's general body recently granted approval for proposals to repair both tar and macadamised roads across the entire city. These proposals are designed to cover repair works in all 31 municipal wards throughout the monsoon period and, as needed, extend into the next financial year. Tenders for appointing contractors are expected to be floated by the end of this month, marking a swift move toward implementation.
Contractors to Handle Materials and Machinery
In addition to executing road repairs, the selected contractors will be responsible for supplying essential construction materials, including macadam, murum, and tar. They must also provide the necessary machinery required for the work. A civic official emphasized the strategic advantage of this approach, stating, "Finalising contractors in advance will enable Nashik Municipal Corporation to fix potholes seamlessly throughout 2026-27. Contractors will be obligated to respond to pothole complaints during the entire financial year."
Learning from Last Year's Challenges
The decision comes in response to last year's early onset of the monsoon, which lasted from May 6 through mid-October, leaving no window for pre-monsoon activities such as clearing nullahs, cleaning stormwater drains, and other preparatory works. Continuous rainfall further deteriorated road conditions, forcing the civic body to undertake temporary repairs using granular sub-base (GSB) material. Due to persistent rain, the public works department had to refill the same potholes multiple times, as tar-laying was not feasible under wet conditions.
Restoration of Excavated Roads Planned
Officials revealed that the corporation plans to restore roads excavated by MNGL and other utility agencies over the next two months, specifically in April and May. Contractors for this restoration work have already been appointed through tenders, and work orders have been issued, ensuring a coordinated effort to improve infrastructure.
Overview of Nashik's Road Network
Nashik boasts an extensive road network of approximately 2,400 kilometers, comprising around 1,650 kilometers of tar roads, 350 kilometers of concrete roads, and nearly 400 kilometers of macadamised roads. This diverse infrastructure necessitates a well-planned maintenance strategy, especially ahead of the monsoon, to uphold safety and accessibility for all residents.
