Navi Mumbai Airport Nearing Formal Naming After D B Patil, MP Confirms
The proposal to name the Navi Mumbai International Airport after the late farmers' leader D B Patil is set to be presented before the Union Cabinet in the near future, according to Bhiwandi MP Suresh Mhatre. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Mhatre revealed that Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu has assured him of expediting the process at the Cabinet level.
Long-Pending Demand Gains Momentum
Mhatre emphasized that the demand to honor Loknete D.B. Patil by naming the airport after him has been a persistent issue, raised multiple times in Parliament and before the Union government. "The proposal to name Navi Mumbai International Airport after Loknete D.B. Patil, which has been pending for many years, will soon be placed before the Union Cabinet," the MP stated. He added that both the Central and state governments are positively inclined towards this move, indicating strong political support.
During a recent meeting with Civil Aviation Minister Naidu, Mhatre received confirmation that the proposal would be tabled before the Cabinet promptly. "Therefore, in the coming days, the Navi Mumbai International Airport will be named after Loknete D.B. Patil," the NCP (SP) leader affirmed, highlighting the imminent resolution of this longstanding matter.
Background on Navi Mumbai International Airport
The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), located in Ulwe, commenced commercial operations on December 25, 2025. It serves as the second airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, initially launching with domestic flights operated by carriers such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express. This infrastructure project aims to alleviate congestion at the existing Mumbai airport and boost regional connectivity.

In addition to the airport naming proposal, MP Suresh Mhatre addressed other key infrastructure developments in the region. He noted that the Kalyan-Murbad railway project, which has faced delays, is now making progress. Furthermore, to enhance commuter convenience, three long-distance trains on the Diva-Vasai route will soon include stops at Bhiwandi Road railway station. These initiatives are part of broader efforts to improve transportation and economic growth in the area.
