Navi Mumbai F4 Race Sparks Environmental Concerns as Over 70 Trees Face Removal
In a move that has ignited local controversy, more than 70 trees in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, are slated to be either cut down or relocated to facilitate a Formula-4 (F4) racing event scheduled for the end of this year. According to activist reports, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is investing approximately Rs 28 crore in this entry-level motorsport spectacle, raising significant environmental and civic questions.
Infrastructure Overhaul and Community Impact
The proposed race infrastructure will necessitate the removal of a road divider along a key stretch, directly affecting residents until the road is fully restored post-event. Additionally, a local playground is earmarked for use during the three-day event, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from activists and elected representatives alike. The commissioner, acting as administrator of the NMMC, has already signed the agreement for the F4 event, setting the stage for potential conflict.
Political and Public Backlash
Girish Mhatre, president of the NMMC sports, culture, and youth welfare committee and a corporator, has tabled a proposal in the general body meeting seeking formal approval for the event and its associated expenditure. This comes amid growing dissent from Nerul villagers, who have vocally opposed the racing track's intrusion into the playground area. Notably, the NMMC had previously invested crores of rupees in maintaining the road divider and trees, adding to the irony of the current situation.
During a recent meeting, villagers presented their grievances to Mayor Sujata Patil, who assured them that the open space would be restored after the event and continue to serve as a playground. However, local activist Pravin Khedkar remains skeptical, alleging, "More than 70 trees are to be affected due to the proposed event-related infrastructure work." He has called for detailed information from the NMMC to assess the full environmental impact.
Debate Over Alternative Venues
While some elected representatives argue that no other suitable location exists within the city for such an event, others have pointed out potential benefits, such as improved drainage and facilities in the playground area resulting from the infrastructure work. Suggestions to host the race elsewhere, including in Kharghar, Ulwe, or Morbe, have been dismissed, leaving the current plan on track. The NMMC is poised to commence infrastructure preparations imminently, despite the ongoing protests.
