A short-range rifle firing range constructed by the Old Students' Association of Field Marshal Cariappa College at a cost of Rs 5.5 lakh was officially inaugurated on Tuesday. The ceremony was led by Colonel Rejith Mukundan, Commanding Officer of the 19th Karnataka Battalion NCC, and Kodagu University Vice-Chancellor Ashok Sangappa Alura.
Colonel Mukundan Highlights the Need
Speaking at the event, Colonel Rejith Mukundan noted that Madikeri and its surrounding areas previously lacked a dedicated firing range for NCC cadets. He described the new facility as highly valuable for the 19th Karnataka NCC Battalion. The Colonel urged cadets to make full use of the range and commended the Old Students' Association for recognizing this critical need and donating the range, which is situated adjacent to the college grounds.
Vice-Chancellor's Remarks
Ashok Sangappa Alura, Vice-Chancellor of Kodagu University, acknowledged that the Old Students' Association of Field Marshal Cariappa College has contributed several facilities to the institution over time. He expressed hope that such generous support would continue in the future. Alura encouraged NCC students to pursue their goals with unwavering focus, emphasizing that NCC helps instill discipline and patriotism. He urged all students to join the NCC.
Retired Officer's Reflections
Retired police officer Mukkatira A Appaiah shared his personal experiences from NCC training and various camps during his student days. He advised students to set clear future goals and expressed concern that firing ranges that once existed in the district are now being encroached upon. Appaiah's remarks underscored the importance of preserving such facilities for future generations.
Association President's Pride
Bollajira Aiyappa, President of the Old Students' Association, noted with pride that many former students of Field Marshal Cariappa College have held high positions, including in the Indian Army. He specifically highlighted former student Army officer Puttichanda S Ganapathy, who received the Maha Vir Chakra for his operations in Sri Lanka. Aiyappa stated that the college has produced several distinguished Army officers, reflecting the institution's legacy of excellence.
