As the top leadership of the Nationalist Congress Party attempts to downplay ongoing merger negotiations between its two factions, significant differences in opinion have emerged publicly among party leaders regarding the potential reunification. The controversy centers around a recent gathering that has sparked intense speculation about the future of Maharashtra's political landscape.
Controversial Meeting in Baramati Fuels Speculation
On Saturday, senior NCP(SP) leader Jayant Patil made a significant claim that a meeting with Ajit Pawar had concluded with a mutual understanding that the two factions would merge following the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections. This statement came after a video surfaced showing several prominent leaders together, including Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil, Shashikant Shinde, Rajesh Tope, Amol Kolhe, Harshvardhan Patil, and Rohit Pawar.
Notably, no other leader from Ajit Pawar's faction was present at this meeting apart from Ajit Pawar himself, adding to the intrigue surrounding the gathering's purpose and significance within party circles.
Conflicting Accounts Emerge From Party Leaders
NCP leader Sunil Tatkare offered a different perspective on the controversial meeting, stating that the gathering had occurred during a tea break at an agricultural exhibition in Baramati. He emphasized that Ajit Pawar had subsequently addressed the media to clarify that discussions were limited to local body elections rather than any broader merger negotiations.
However, Anil Patil, MLA and chief whip of the NCP, introduced further ambiguity by noting that it remained unclear whether the meeting focused on local body elections or merger discussions. He pointed out that the only leader who could provide a definitive answer to this question was no longer alive, leaving the matter open to interpretation and speculation.
Growing Support for Reunification Among Some Factions
Despite some party leaders expressing opposition to the merger, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and NCP leader Anna Bansode has publicly voiced support for the move. He revealed that he had long advocated for unity between the two factions and stressed that since Sharad Pawar is regarded as a guiding figure by party workers, an early decision on reunification would prove crucial for both the state and the party cadre.
This sentiment has found additional backing from Minister of Cooperation Babasaheb Patil and Minister Narhari Zirwal, who have both endorsed the idea of a merger. Zirwal expressed confidence that the parties would unite soon, noting that meetings between the two leaders had been occurring for an extended period.
