NCP Minister Narhari Zirwal Embroiled in Viral Video Controversy
Mumbai witnessed a political storm on Thursday as NCP minister Narhari Zirwal found himself at the center of a fresh controversy following the viral circulation of a video showing him with a transgender person in a bedroom setting. The footage, which has sparked widespread debate and condemnation, depicts Zirwal asleep while the transgender individual sits nearby in the room.
Allegations of Blackmail and Extortion Surface
Adding fuel to the fire, Ravi Yadav, who claims to be the brother of Pavan Yadav allegedly featured in the video, made startling revelations during a television interview. He asserted, "She has recorded videos and taken photographs with influential figures. Her modus operandi involves blackmail and extortion. She has even demanded powerful positions such as an MLC seat or a role on the transgender board. I too have been subjected to her blackmail tactics." These allegations have intensified calls for Zirwal's immediate removal from office.
Political Reactions and Demands for Action
The opposition, led by Congress and activist Anjali Damania, has vehemently demanded Zirwal's dismissal. Damania expressed outrage, stating, "This video is utterly shameful. The same minister was previously linked to a bribery scandal. Does the party intend to showcase such leadership? He must be sacked without delay." Meanwhile, state Congress chief Harshavardhan Sakpal called for the government's dismissal, drawing parallels to global scandals like the Epstein files.
Conspiracy Theories and Party Defense
In contrast, NCP politician Amol Mitkari defended his colleague, questioning the timing and motive behind the video's release. He suggested, "Why has this eight-month-old footage surfaced immediately after the assembly session? It appears to be a calculated move to divert attention from the SIT investigation into the rape case involving astrologer Ashok Kharat, which may expose powerful individuals." Mitkari further alleged a pre-planned conspiracy, noting that Zirwal was the first to advocate for Sunetra Pawar to succeed her late husband as NCP chief, followed by the bribery case and now this controversy.
Historical Context and Ongoing Scandals
This incident marks the second major controversy to engulf Zirwal, a politician from the tribal-dominated Dindori district. Just two months prior, the Anti-Corruption Bureau apprehended a clerk in his office for accepting a bribe of Rs 35,000, prompting similar resignation demands. Both scandals have emerged in the aftermath of Ajit Pawar's tragic death in a January air crash, with Zirwal having been an early proponent of merging Ajit Pawar's NCP faction with that of his uncle, Sharad Pawar.
Internal Party Pressure on Sunetra Pawar
The controversy erupted on the very day Sunetra Pawar completed one month as NCP president, mounting pressure on her from both opposition and party members to take decisive action. Some office-bearers from Nashik, Ahilyanagar, and other units have formally requested the removal of state women's wing chief Rupali Chakankar, whose name has been implicated in the Ashok Kharat case. Prerana Balkawade, head of Nashik NCP's women wing, emphasized, "The party's reputation is suffering due to Chakankar's association with the Kharat scandal."
As the political landscape heats up, the Zirwal video controversy underscores deeper tensions within the NCP and raises questions about governance and accountability in Maharashtra's leadership.
