NCP (SP) Rules Out Merger with Ajit Pawar Faction, Says Decision Final
NCP (SP) Ends Merger Talks with Ajit Pawar Group

The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) has decisively ended all speculation about a potential merger with the breakaway NCP group led by Ajit Pawar. State NCP (SP) chief Shashikant Shinde announced on Wednesday that the party will no longer entertain discussions on the matter, effectively closing the door on reunification.

Leadership Meeting Confirms Stance

The decision was formalized during a meeting of the party's elected representatives and senior office bearers, chaired by NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar in Mumbai. Shinde stated, "In the meeting, we clearly told our party members that the merger matter is over for us. We have decided to move on and strengthen our party base." The gathering was attended by most senior members, but notably absent was Rohit Pawar, the grandnephew of Sharad Pawar and MLA from Karjat Jamkhed.

Rohit Pawar's Absence Explained

Rohit Pawar's absence sparked speculation about internal discord. However, he clarified on social media that reports of him being angry were baseless. He explained that he was in Pune attending to urgent water supply issues for his constituency. "The issue of water from Junnar-Shirur for the farmers became crucial, so I had to suddenly come to the Irrigation Bhavan to resolve it," he posted on X. He emphasized his continued loyalty to the party leadership.

Background of Merger Talks

Recent meetings between senior NCP leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare with Sharad Pawar had reignited merger rumors. However, party working president Supriya Sule firmly dismissed the possibility, stating, "All talks of a merger stopped on the day my brother (Ajit Pawar) died." She indicated that the party is now focusing on key opposition issues such as price rise, the NEET paper leak, and the fuel crisis.

Internal Uncertainty Addressed

According to senior NCP (SP) members, growing uncertainty within the party prompted the leadership to take a clear stand. Some members feared that a merger would create intense competition for electoral seats, potentially leaving some without opportunities. Additionally, there were concerns that some members were exploring options with other parties. A senior NCP member told TOI, "It became quite crucial for the leadership to clear the air and bring back confidence."

Opposition Strategy Moving Forward

Shinde confirmed that NCP (SP) will remain in the opposition and has no plans to join the National Democratic Alliance. The party intends to launch statewide agitations to address public issues. "We intend to be more aggressive about issues," Shinde added. The Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance is expected to collectively tour parts of Maharashtra after August 15.

Rohit Pawar criticized some opposition members for not actively raising public concerns. "While people are facing several problems, some are making statements on social media. They are not agitating on the ground," he told reporters. The party's leadership is now focused on grassroots mobilization and preparing for future challenges.
