Nishant Kumar, Nitish's Son, in JD(U) Rajya Sabha Speculation

Nishant Kumar, Son of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Drawn into Political Spotlight Amid Rajya Sabha Speculation

For an individual who has deliberately maintained a low profile and avoided the public eye, Nishant Kumar—the son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar—has repeatedly found himself at the center of intense media scrutiny. The most recent episode unfolded on Wednesday when his name briefly emerged as a potential JD(U) candidate for the Rajya Sabha, only for the focus to swiftly shift back to his father by evening.

A Life Away from the Political Arena

Born on July 20, 1975, Nishant Kumar has consistently led a life far removed from the tumultuous world of politics. He was raised under the care of his late mother, Manju Sinha, a government school teacher, with whom he resided in Kankarbagh, Patna. His educational journey took him through St Karen’s School in Patna, Manav Bharti India International School in Mussoorie, and culminated in a BTech degree from BIT Mesra. Throughout his academic and personal life, he has displayed little inclination toward embracing a public or political career.

Quiet Demeanor and Media Avoidance

Known for his reserved and quiet demeanor, Nishant Kumar rarely engages with the media and steadfastly avoids political controversies. On the rare occasions when he has been approached by journalists, his comments have been limited to praising his father. On the eve of the 2025 elections, he remarked, “The people of Bihar will definitely give him (Nitish) an opportunity to work. He has worked a lot and will continue to do so in the future.”

Political Projections and Heir Apparent Talks

Despite his personal disinterest, certain factions within the JD(U) have persistently projected him as a potential heir apparent ahead of the 2025 assembly elections. This push is largely driven by concerns over the party’s future stability in the event of Nitish Kumar’s eventual exit from active politics. Nishant, who remains unmarried and reportedly holds property inherited from his mother, is notably not even a formal member of the JD(U).

Political observers and his supporters speculate that he could potentially be appointed as deputy chief minister if the BJP forms a government with its own chief minister after Nitish Kumar transitions to the Rajya Sabha. However, given the rapidly evolving political landscape in Bihar, it appears increasingly unlikely that Nishant Kumar will be able to maintain his distance from the spotlight for much longer.
