In a development that has sent shockwaves through Bihar's political landscape, Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar on Thursday filed his nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Family and Party Opposition Fails to Deter Nitish
According to senior JD(U) leaders and close family members, the decision was met with strong resistance from Nitish Kumar's son, Nishant Kumar, along with other relatives and party workers across Bihar. "Not only his son Nishant, but the entire family tried to convince Nitish ji throughout the night so that he does not go to Rajya Sabha at this juncture. But he remained adamant on his decision and today he filed nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections," revealed Anil Kumar, Nitish's brother-in-law.
The announcement, made via a post on social media platform X about an hour before he arrived at the assembly secretariat, stunned JD(U) cadres and triggered visible unrest within the party ranks. While Nitish has not yet formally resigned from the chief minister's post, the development has fueled intense speculation that a new government, likely to be led by the BJP, will soon take shape in Bihar.

In his X post, Nitish Kumar framed the transition as the realization of a long-held personal ambition tied to his political journey. "Since the beginning of my parliamentary life, I had a desire in my heart that I become a member of both Houses of the Bihar legislature as well as both Houses of Parliament. In this sequence, in the elections being held this time, I wish to become a member of the Rajya Sabha," he wrote.
He extended gratitude to the people of Bihar for their sustained support over more than two decades, positioning his shift as continuity rather than withdrawal from public service. "For more than the past two decades, you have continuously maintained your trust and support with me, and on the strength of that, we have served Bihar and all of you with complete dedication," Nitish stated, adding that this trust has enabled Bihar to present a new dimension of development and respect.
Assurances of Continued Involvement Amidst Party Turmoil
Nitish sought to reassure supporters about his ongoing role in state affairs, writing, "I want to assure you with complete honesty that my relationship with you will continue in the future as well, and my resolve to work together with you to build a developed Bihar will remain steadfast. The new government that will be formed will have my full cooperation and guidance."
However, these assurances did little to quell the anger among sections of JD(U) workers. In a dramatic display of dissent, party workers vandalized the JD(U) office, alleging that the BJP had hatched a "conspiracy" to oust their leader with the assistance of "traitors within the party."

Nitish Kumar was accompanied during the nomination filing by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who flew in from Delhi specifically for the occasion, underscoring the high-stakes nature of the political maneuver.
Sources indicate that Nitish is expected to remain chief minister for a short interim period, possibly a few weeks, before relinquishing the post, potentially continuing until he departs for Delhi to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament.
Within JD(U) circles, attention has now shifted to the potential political entry of Nitish's son, Nishant Kumar. Meanwhile, sources within the NDA reveal that Nitish has communicated to the BJP leadership the necessity of projecting "a dalit face" in the succession plan. This suggestion entails either the BJP selecting a successor from the Scheduled Castes or appointing a JD(U) leader as deputy chief minister, highlighting the intricate caste calculus that underpins Bihar's politics.
