Bihar Political Landscape Erupts Following Nitish Kumar's Resignation Announcement
Months after a high-stakes assembly election, politics in Bihar has plunged into fresh turmoil following Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's decision to resign from the top position to pursue a Rajya Sabha seat. According to multiple reports, Nitish Kumar is expected to submit his formal resignation as Chief Minister and vacate his official residence on April 14, setting the stage for a significant political transition in the state.
JD(U) Confirms Government Formation Process to Begin After April 13
Janata Dal (United) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha stated that the process for forming a new government in Bihar will "roll out after April 13." Jha advised journalists to consult state government officials for more specific details about the impending changes. Meanwhile, senior JD(U) leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary emphasized that "the new chief minister will be elected by legislators of the NDA upon the recommendation of the BJP."
Chaudhary further elaborated that "the BJP has an important role to play in the formation of a new government" and that once the BJP presents its plan, necessary procedures will follow accordingly. This statement underscores the BJP's influential position within the ruling National Democratic Alliance coalition in Bihar.
BJP Leaders Visit Nitish's Residence Amid Succession Speculation
Several prominent BJP leaders visited Nitish Kumar's residence following the resignation announcement, fueling intense speculation about potential successors. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, considered among the frontrunners to replace Nitish Kumar, was among those who met with the outgoing Chief Minister.
Another significant visitor was BJP leader Lakhendra Paswan, whose presence sparked media speculation that the party might be considering pushing for this Dalit leader as a potential candidate. In a related development, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been appointed as the central observer for the election of the leader of the BJP legislature party, indicating the party's systematic approach to the leadership transition.
JD(U) Workers Campaign for Nitish Kumar's Son Nishant
In a surprising development, JD(U) workers displayed posters across Patna early morning calling for Nitish Kumar's son Nishant Kumar to assume the chief ministerial position. The posters, put up by "Nitish sevaks," described Nishant as a "youth leader" and urged him to "come out of the shadows" and enter active politics.
The posters contained the message: "We do not need a bulldozer, nor riots or unrest in Bihar. We need a young jansevak... it is time for him to come out of the shadow." While speculation suggests Nishant Kumar might potentially take up the role of deputy chief minister, no official announcement has been made regarding his political future.
Internal JD(U) Dynamics and BJP Relations
According to party sources quoted by news agency PTI, there are significant misgivings among JD(U) cadres about the role played by Sanjay Kumar Jha and other close aides of Nitish Kumar in recent developments. During Nitish Kumar's visit to the JD(U) office in Delhi, many party workers insisted that even after he steps down, the top post should not be given to the BJP.
The sources noted that "in Nishant (Nitish Kumar's son, who recently joined the party), we have a young leader capable enough of stepping into his father's shoes." However, they acknowledged that Nitish Kumar is unlikely to push for his son's candidacy. The party workers emphasized they should at least insist on securing benefits equivalent to those currently enjoyed by the BJP, including positions like two deputy chief ministers, the Speaker of the Assembly, and the crucial Home portfolio.
JD(U) sources expressed concern about the BJP's assertive approach, citing the alacrity with which the BJP nominated Harivansh Narayan Singh to the Rajya Sabha shortly after JD(U) denied him a third consecutive term.
RJD Alleges Conspiracy Against Nitish Kumar
Rashtriya Janata Dal national working president Tejashwi Yadav claimed that JD(U) president Nitish Kumar was relinquishing his post under "pressure" from his own party colleagues, who he alleged had been "intimidated or allured" by ally BJP. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an RJD function, Tejashwi asserted that "the deal for removing Nitish Kumar had been struck by some bigwigs in the JD(U) long back."
Tejashwi dismissed suggestions that Nitish Kumar was stepping down voluntarily, stating it was "rubbish to say that Nitish Kumar, who does not enjoy sound physical and mental health, is stepping down out of his own wish." He pointed to recent visuals from Delhi where Sanjay Jha prevented Nitish Kumar from interacting with media as evidence of the "insult and pressure" the veteran leader is enduring.
The RJD leader further alleged that JD(U) leaders behind this conspiracy have either been allured by the BJP or are living in fear of central investigative agencies like the Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation, which he claimed have become instruments of the party ruling at the Centre.
Nitish Kumar Takes Rajya Sabha Oath
Amid the political developments, Nitish Kumar took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha in a brief ceremony at Parliament House in New Delhi. The oath was administered by Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan in his chamber, marking the formal beginning of Nitish Kumar's transition from state to national politics.
The political situation in Bihar remains fluid as multiple stakeholders position themselves ahead of the expected leadership change, with the BJP's role in government formation, internal JD(U) dynamics, and opposition allegations creating a complex political landscape that will determine the state's future governance direction.
