Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar conducted a detailed inspection of the Rajdhani reservoir situated within the state secretariat complex in Patna on Wednesday. The visit focused on observing the rich biodiversity, particularly the winter migratory birds that flock to this urban water body.
An Urban Haven for Winged Visitors
During the tour, officials from the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department (EFCCD) briefed the Chief Minister on the variety of flora and avian species found in the reservoir area. They provided specific details about the birds that visit annually.
The officials informed that migratory species such as Lalsar, Coot, Pintail, Gadwall, and Comb Duck arrive at the reservoir every winter. They also noted the presence of terrestrial birds like Treepie, Cuckoo, Hornbill, and Roller. Among the prominent migratory species highlighted were the Lesser Whistling Duck, Ferruginous Duck, Cormorant, and Moorhen.
Conservation and Management in a Dense City
A communique issued from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) explained the factors that make the site attractive for birds. It stated that the availability of food sources like fish, insects, aquatic plants, and wet grass contributes to the maximum congregation of birds. The note emphasized that this natural site thrives amidst Patna's dense population and is actively managed by the EFCCD.
Following the reservoir inspection, the CM also visited the nearby Rajdhani Vatika, where he inquired about the facilities provided. He was greeted by people present in the Vatika complex.
Entourage of Officials
The Chief Minister's tour was attended by several senior officials and leaders. The group included Water Resources Department Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, JD(U) MLC Lalan Sarraf, the CM's secretaries Kumar Ravi and Chandrashekhar Singh, and the CM's special duty officer Gopal Singh, along with other departmental officials.
The visit underscores the state's attention to urban ecological sites and the conservation of migratory bird pathways within Bihar's capital.
